This unlocked a memory I never expected to drudge up again!

📽️ I have not been able to stop thinking about The Odyssey and how it feels like a direct commentary on life in America today. Bolstered by some of the best performances you’re likely to see this year, The Odyssey is rad as hell. Christopher Nolan knocked this one out of the park.

The Odyssey
I have no familiarity with Homer’s Odyssey. It feels weird to admit that, like I’m somehow admitting I’m illiterate because I’ve never read one of the oldest stories in human history. I’ve just nev…

📽️ Sometimes, a movie makes you feel complicated feelings. Growing up sucks, and I’m not entirely sure if Kiki’s Delivery Service celebrates what it means to mature or mourns the end of childhood. It’s a beautiful flick, maybe a little too bittersweet for me, but I can’t deny its charm.

Kiki’s Delivery Service
Kiki’s Delivery Service is one of the few films directed by Hayao Miyazaki that doesn’t sit quite right with me. It’s not for lack of trying. It’s a gorgeously animated film, and it has a lot…

Enjoyed the first episode of Lanterns, but did not care for the twist ending. Curious where the show goes from here, but I’m a bit annoyed too.

📽️ Did a double feature of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey, and hot damn, couldn’t have asked for a better two movies to watch in the theater. And both in IMAX! An awesome win.

📽️ F1 is such a rad movie. It works because it prioritizes genuine drama and compelling characters over technical minutia. It confidently introduces viewers to the high-stakes world of F1 racing, breezing through its 156-minute runtime with all the breakneck speed and precision of a final racing lap.

📽️ Showed my four-year-old daughter her first Miyazaki film (after MUCH debate) and it wound up being a seminal childhood film for her. She watched it FIVE TIMES in two days. I’ve never seen her obsess this hard. Fatherhood also allowed me to see the film in a new light. It’s so great. My review:

📽️ After three years, Mando and Grogu have returned in the horrendously named Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu. I dunno who needs to hear it, but there’s a new Star Wars TV show called Maul: Shadow Lord and it TOTALLY rules. Beautiful artwork and score, great action, and plenty of Maul. My Star Wars fandom has been at all all-time low since The Rise of Skywalker, but this is definitely worth watching.

📽️ I won’t see the Mario Galaxy movie until Sunday, but I’m exhausted from the discourse already. Very telling that virtually everyone who has panned it has also mentioned their kids loved it. Not that kids are always the arbiters of good taste, but sometimes we forget to just have fun.

Not sure I agree with that. I don’t think reviews are meant to be part of the promotional cycle. I spoil stuff all the time, because I’m dissecting a movie and how it makes me feel. Did a twist really work, or not work? Why? Skimming over that does a disservice, I feel. Just my opinion!

📽️ Been thinking a lot about the nature of film criticism lately. About how the best critics aren’t the people who dutifully review each new major release, but rather the ones who write with such passion that it drives you to seek out something new. That’s the power of film criticism.
