Designing for Life in Urban India | 3–7 April 2026 This workshop is organised by Kalpavriksh – in collaboration with Sambhaavnaa Institute. Co-created by the subgroup of The Alternatives Learning Collective(TALC) Hosted under the Vikalp Sangam process 🌱

What might our cities look and feel like if they were designed as homes for life, human and more-than-human alike?

This 5-day immersive course invites you to explore ecological design, the metacrisis and grounded alternatives shaping regenerative urban futures. Through talks, discussions, hands-on learning, storytelling and collective reflection, we will reimagine how we live, work and care in cities. Thematic focus areas include urban governance, food and health, and energy.

Open to anyone curious about ecological living, urban transformation, social justice and regenerative futures.

📅 3–7 April 2026 (Participants are expected to arrive on the 2nd April)
📍 Sambhaavnaa Institute, Palampur

We are happy to release this report on the traditional governance system of Spiti (Himachal Pradesh), focused on the village of Kibber. The village headman is called the gatpo (or lambardar/nambardar officially), and plays a crucial role in village decision making from socio-cultural, economic, ecological and political dimensions to also spiritual. Kibber has a robust decision making process and has designed the local village institutions to ensure some forms of direct democracy. For this, the study also looked at the interface between the local/traditional and new/modern governance systems, viz. the gatpo/village customary institutions with the panchayat and local administration, and internal inequities .

Through this documentation, we highlight key learnings on governance, democracy, autonomy, and management of the natural commons, specifically in Kibber but also relevant for our broader understanding of these concepts. Crucially, we ask: if the gatpo system continues to have relevance, what can be done to sustain it, clarify its role, tackle its internal inequities and strengthen its functioning? This study is a collaborative effort between Kalpavriksh and Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF) along with the residents of Kibber.

Social Well-being and Justice Sangam took place at the Fireflies Intercultural Centre from January 23rd- 26th, 2025. The four-day sangam brought together participants from all over India to embark on a shared inquiry on social action, spirituality, and justice. vikalpsangam.org/article/vika...

How can we nourish and sustain communities of hope and action amidst climate and societal breakdown? How can we draw on India's rich history of pluralistic traditions to build interfaith and intergenerational dialogue?

We explored these questions and many more during the Social Well-being and Justice Sangam which took place at the Fireflies Intercultural Centre from January 23rd- 26th, 2025.
