Late on Wednesday night, dozens of sailors strolled down Pattaya's famed Walking Street, along with tourists, journalists and police. Of the roughly 20 sailors approached throughout the evening, most declined to talk, saying they were under strict orders not to speak to the press. The harsh conditions aboard the ship were hardly a secret. Back in July, CNN correspondent Pamela Brown spent three days on board, highlighting the severe isolation, sleep deprivation and mental health strains afflicting the crew.

Deep suspicion of reporters was on display during a hotel dinner, where two sailors, who didn’t disclose their names, reluctantly spoke about their experiences, offering only vague, one-line answers. Pressed on official assertions that conditions aboard the ship were fine, both shook their heads in disagreement before paying the check and politely excusing themselves.

Moments later, one of the sailors doubled back, holding up his phone to reveal a message typed on the screen: “Pamela Brown got it right.”
