Living in a 1930s house in California, so there's a significant risk of old-house stories. Otherwise, expect some combination of cooking, computers, biochemistry, skiing, and hiking.

The Childcatcher in _Chitty Chitty Bang Bang_. The bad-relationship royals didn't start to disturb me until adulthood.

I think it's lovely. My spouse with the degree in ancient near-east archeo says: "YES. Oh, yes. That is _perfect_."

Early for #MosaicMonday, but a progress update on my edible Theodora mosaic (made out of fondant on wafer paper)! Think it is almost done ☺️
Photo of sheet of water paper with lots of differently colored pieces of fondant that I colored and cut tesserae out of, and made a mosaic of the empress Theodora with a gold background; I attached the tesserae with edible ‘food glue’

That was really common on the US East Coast - places with gas lights were all piped for lighting in all the right places, and inside the gas pipes there's no oxygen for combustion, so it's... kinda safe, but compared to gas lighting, safer.

Oh my yes. Our place is only 90 years old and was very well built to start with, but. I'm guessing your wire nut was someone trying to connect thin stranded wire to solid, and getting arcing?

One chapter in, it has what I think of as the Victorian popular-novel voice. If you've read other stuff from that period, you'll know if that's off-putting or not. My impression is that the narrator could not be forced at knifepoint to speak in anything besides RP, but it's early days yet.

Your 3rd dose today of Anthropic settlement madness (at least from me). Authors, CHECK YOUR CLAIMS! Your situation may have changed, per this email from the settlement administrator that some authors are receiving (subject heading: Anthropic Copyright Settlement: Allocation Updates)
We made updates that may affect your claim.
What Changed?
Wed, Sep 30,
2026 at 5:35 AM
Based on feedback from claimants, we updated how certain works are categorized.
In particular, where multiple claimants submitted default claims for the same
ownership interest in a work, we changed those works from agreement to
disagreement.
In addition, the portal is updated to reflect that some claimants changed their sole
ownership claims to default claims, and some claimants withdrew their claims.
What This Means for You
As a result of these updates, some works on your claim may now be categorized
differently. We encourage you to review the current allocations for your works.
How to Review and Update Your Allocations
Please use your claim number and PIN above to log into the portal below.
Claim Summary and Allocation Portal
For help making updates, please visit the allocation portal instructions.
If You Already Submitted Updates
If you already updated the allocation for a work, then you do not need to
submit those updates again. Any changes you submitted previously
through the online portal are recorded, but the portal is not being
updated in real time. If you submit multiple updates for the same
copyright number, your most recent submission will replace any earlier
submissionsWhat’s Next?
We will continue to work with claimants to help resolve disputes.
For works where all rightsholders are in agreement and where all necessary
payment information is provided, we expect to send a first round of payments in
November 2026.
If You Have Questions
Please contact us at 1-877-206-2314 or info@AnthropicCopyrightSettlement.com.
Regards,
Settlement Administrator

A reminder to folks to go get your updated COVID vaccine as soon as you can if you haven’t already. We were planning to go in this weekend, but instead my daughter brought COVID home from school before we could manage. Sigh, not how I wanted to make time to read Seanan’s latest book.

Yeah, more suited to generating Manhattan-style piped-in steam. Which is only regionally useful anyway. At these power levels, I wonder if you could usefully boil water and run a steam engine to recapture some of the waste power.

It's true - the noise would be a non-starter with any kind of traditional system. I do feel, perhaps naively, that a good liquid cooling system that connects to a heat pump or an outdoor radiator could be pretty quiet.

Yes. In midwinter perhaps, but I'm not sure society is ready for a return to seasonality like "Only do computation from All Saints Day until Shrove Tuesday. April-October, I dunno - go outdoors or something".

We've had one in my SF neighborhood for a while, wrapped in transparent pink so the overall effect is sort of ashes-of-roses. They park it on the street, which makes its extreme width way more apparent.

America had wiped out measles. Now babies are infected at birth.
Congenital measles has rarely been seen in the U.S. That’s changing as vaccination declines and more pregnant women become infected.
