"Suddenly, however, on the 7th of October, my husband, with the whole general staff, decamped. Our misfortunes may be said to date from this moment. I had just sat down with my husband at his quarters to breakfast. General Frazier, and, I believe, Generals Burgoyne and Phillips, also, were to have dined with me on that same day. I observed considerable movement among the troops. ...I had scarcely got back to my quarters when I heard skirmishing and firing, which by degrees, became constantly heavier, until, finally, the noises became frightful. It was a terrible cannonade, and I was more dead than alive. About three o'clock in the afternoon, in place of the guests who were to have dined with me, they brought in to me, upon a litter, poor General Frazier, mortally wounded. Our dining table, which was already spread, was taken away, and in its place they fixed up a bed for the general."-Baroness Frederika Charlotte Louise Riedesel, Saratoga, 1777In the fall of 1777, having followed her husband the Major General Riedesel from Germany to accompany him as he joined Burgoyne's campaign for Albany, the Baroness Riedesel and her three daughters found themselves witnessing the Battle of Freeman's Farm and caught in the crossfire of the Battle of Bemis Heights. She spent six days in the cellar of the Marshall House near Saratoga, sheltering her daughters and tending to wounded soldiers while cannon balls whistled and rolled overhead, all while recording her experiences in her journals. Later, her published account would become one of the most vivid and engaging first-person accounts that we have of the American Revolutionary War.I have spent the last 9 months slowly bringing the Baroness, as depicted by @saratoga250 on their augmented reality banners, to life and I am pleased to finally show you Charlotte, in her traveling Brunswick, photographed at Saratoga National Historical Park.#historicalcostume #historicalcostuming #18thcentury #saratoga250 #revolutionarywar
