Sorry for the essay, but tl;dr I just want folks to have an open mind about them and also take notice that their critiques about neopronouns are usually recycled ones that were (& are still being) used against other members of the LGBTQ community. Folks with neopronouns are also usually very chill.

As for it/its pronouns, I definitely don't blame you for the discomfort because it is controversial, but the way I see it is that since trans people get called "it" by cis people all the time, using it/its is like a form of reclamation. Sometimes finding identity as an It just makes sense for them.

Plus the pool of people who use neopronouns is incredibly small, so IMO it's silly to make a big deal out of them. It doesn't make sense for us to be like "gender is a social construct! gender is made up! you can describe your gender as a bag of rice who cares!" but then complain about neopronouns.

The noteworthy nonbinary lesbian icon Leslie Feinberg for example still went by she, but zie also used zie & hir. Zie was very adamant about people using zie and hir too, and especially during hir major activist work in the 70's and 80s!

Nonbinary people get told they/them can't be used as a singular pronoun, they can't use he/him or she/her (especially if either of those were their assigned pronouns), but when someone doesn't like any of those three pronoun sets, what are they gonna do? That's where neopronouns fill the gap!

Think about our community's own infighting. Gay men & lesbians think bi/pan people are "performative". Cis people think trans people are "performative". Trans people think nonbinary people are "performative". We're all outcasts to the cishets, so why are we using cishet arguments against each other?

I don't expect everyone to understand neopronouns right off the bat. It might seem weird but the "neo" in neopronouns isn't actually even accurate! Neopronouns have existed as far back as the late 1700's. Funny enough, some scholars back then didn't even like they/them pronouns.
