Shocked #Quartz is one piece of evidence that helps identify large impact areas, like the one left by Chicxulub asteroid. The quartz crystals develop a series of parallel laminae, called shock lamellae that indicate deformation, or breakage of the crystal along multiple, parallel planes. #MinCup26

Boudinage are one of the most spectacular geologic structures and some of my favorite rocks. The boudins are the eye-shaped lenses of rock wedged between the white quartz layers. This happened when the rocks were being stretched by tectonic forces. The eye-shaped lenses, augen… 👇🏼 #MinCup26

Herkimer diamonds are naturally double-terminated quartz crystals with exceptional clarity, mined primarily in Herkimer County, New York. Double termination is very rare in quartz. Link for more info in ALT! #Quartz #MinCup26

A geologic dyke (or dike) is a sheet-like body of rock that cuts vertically or steeply across the layers of pre-existing older rocks. In this case, a quartz dike. These cross-cutting relationships allow relative dating of geologic features. #Quartz #MinCup26

Quartz is a common mineral, with some very important and uncommon properties. One is piezoelectricity. When quartz is squeezed, it generates an electric charge. Together, quartz and earthquakes can promote the formation of gold nuggets, that can be quite large. #Quartz #MinCup26

The #Salt of the Earth The Zagros Mountains are a range that stretches from eastern Turkey to southeastern Iran. The weight of the overlying rock layers and the pressure of the salt itself cause the salt to rise. Plate tectonics also play a role in this active area. Vote #Halite

Widgiemooltha is a 1897 historic town in Western Australia’s goldfields that arose during the gold rush, & was named the aboriginal name for a nearby hill. This pretty purple putnisite crystal was found there. This mineral has a completely unique chemical structure found nowhere else in nature.

Since the minerals, liquids, and gases are well protected from chemical alteration, #quartz inclusions open a window to the past that can help scientists reconstruct the chemical and physical conditions that existed when the rock formed.
This bubble is in liquid inside of a negative crystal which is in a quartz cabochon host. In other words, a two-phase inclusion that happens to be in a negative crystal. (Photos: Wimon Manorotkul)

Brilliant aqua blue #chrysocolla stalactites from Ray mine, in the Scott Mountain area of Mineral Creek District, Pinal County, Arizona, US. cm. A most unusual example of this material because usually you get just stalactites loose and broken off, whereas this is basically a whole pocket cavity of small stalactites, spilling out of the protected pocket. An 111 year-old photo of Mt. Lassen volcanic activity reminds us that Lassen is active and will eventually erupt again. Below (comment) is a link to the history of the 1914 - 1917 eruptions that include the one below. Picture from great uncle and provided by cousin. ⚒️ 🧪 Geosciences geology 🪨
Poorly preserved photo of Mt. Lassen, which awoke from a 27,000 year dormancy on May 30th, 1914. This is likely one of the earliest series of steam explosions that finally culminated in an explosive May 15th, 1915 eruption. More at the comment below.

Flying aboard Voyagers 1 and 2 are identical "golden" records, carrying the story of Earth far into deep space. The 12 inch gold-plated copper discs contain greetings in 60 languages, samples of music from different cultures and eras, and natural and man-made sounds from Earth. They also contain electronic information that an advanced technological civilization could convert into diagrams and photographs.The cover of each gold plated aluminum jacket, designed to protect the record from micrometeorite bombardment, also serves a double purpose in providing the finder a key to playing the record. The explanatory diagram appears on both the inner and outer surfaces of the cover, as the outer diagram will be eroded in time.
Currently, both Voyager probes are sailing adrift in the black sea of interstellar space, having left our solar system.
