I think the city of Liverpool might like a word

It’s also so funny when people argue “Team X isn’t a top 10 team!” but don’t seem to have an opinion about which team should be moved up instead. “Top 10 team” isn’t an objective standard, it varies year to year depending on the quality of the teams!

Oh wow yeah, I’m with you on that one!

That’s great if it’s working for you! But if those are your media consumption habits, surely it’s not notable that you’re not familiar with a new song?

(It’s ok it’s a joke, I don’t really believe there’s a city in America that doesn’t get top 40 songs that can sometimes be annoying, and I’m sure as hell not trying to move there)

There are definitely songs like that, where the title isn’t obvious from the hook! This one feels like it should be more clear-cut, but I guess some people might not register it if you don’t know the title ahead of time?

If you have managed to find a community and media diet where the No. 1 song in the country just doesn’t get played, I would love to find out more. I’m still recovering from my overexposure to “Espresso” in 2024

What I’ve learned from this is that lots of people just don’t take any notice of the music being played at backyard parties, baseball games, your local Starbucks, live TV broadcasts, etc. That’s fine! But those people probably aren’t the best judges of what pop culture is ubiquitous

Also: if you want future babies to contribute less to climate change, a great way to make that possible is dense housing that allows each family to walk/use public transit more often while driving less, and requires less energy to power/heat/cool each housing unit

I was so upset walking around Ann Arbor after that game that Michigan fans tried to console me

Anyone who believes that sports are supposed to be a fun, lighthearted diversion from the strife of daily life has never been exposed to Little League (or any level of competitive sports, but particularly Little League)

No? Again: my position is that I sincerely doubt the pro athletes playing in the most important USMNT game in decades, in front of a great home crowd of tens of thousands, lost because TikTok convinced them their own fans had abandoned them over a FIFA decision they weren’t directly involved in

Victoria Jacobsen @vicky-jacobsen.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Yes and no? They lost 5-2 to Belgium in March. Yeah, it was just a friendly, the goal is just to work stuff out. But still, 5-2 is 5-2. The first two games of the group stage were understandably exciting, but there were valid concerns in the run-up

Victoria Jacobsen @vicky-jacobsen.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
I know dissenting voices get outsized attention, but i think we’d all be surprised at how small that contingent is, especially on the apps young athletes tend to be on, and especially among the accounts they choose to follow. Even plenty of anti-Trump folks didn’t “turn on the team”
000
Victoria Jacobsen @vicky-jacobsen.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
The Belgian coach had a lot to say about the subject yesterday, but ok. But if you’re saying the national team members all thought American fans turned on the team en masse last night…I’d gently suggest that their algorithms are probably not the same as yours. Now after that performance today…
000
Victoria Jacobsen @vicky-jacobsen.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
It’s both insulting to suggest they’re so mentally fragile they wilted because the Belgian coach got mad, and a cop-out to pretend they didn’t lose for all the typical, infuriating sports reasons (knock-out stage nerves, playing a better team, the back line being their biggest liability, etc)

Victoria Jacobsen @vicky-jacobsen.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Of course not just Bluesky! But the idea that US players played terribly because it hurt their feelings that Europeans were rooting against them is so silly. A) it’s not like they were ever the world’s darlings to begin with, and they know that and B) they had an incredible home crowd behind them

Victoria Jacobsen @vicky-jacobsen.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Imagine thinking that in the 36 hours before the most important game of his career, a player would be glued to his phone/the TV. Seriously. I assume they had team meetings? If there’s anyone in the world who could avoid the media cycle, it was the team itself
000
Victoria Jacobsen @vicky-jacobsen.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Uhhh, I suspect most USMNT players haven’t been mainlining Bluesky over the last 24 hours and have bigger concerns than the “hatred of the world” lol. Like, ya know, facing the best team they’ve played so far this tournament, who they’ve already lost to this year.

I truly hope Sorsby is able to stop gambling/ends up in a better place mentally than he was before this news broke. But A) his gambling problem started when he was already in a structured football environment! And B) I doubt being the singular villain of college football is *good* for mental health

And since one of the *significant downsides* to many parts of Europe is racism/hostility to immigrants, I’m definitely not declaring anyone a winner here

I’m pretty sure Europeans invented fascism, since we’re on the topic. And the Germans famously love cars? They built the Autobahn? Europe’s a big, varied place. Like the U.S., there are wonderful things about living in some parts of Europe, and some pretty significant downsides to many

It’s harder to remember that the gorgeous kitchen remodel you saw on Instagram belongs to a “normal” family in North Carolina, but they’re actually making a ton of money in commercial real estate. They seem like our peers, but financially they’re not, even if we sometimes go to the same coffee shop

I think this is spot on, and I think TikTok/instagram feed us more lifestyle content from people who are wealthy but not super notable. I think we all understand why our wedding/kitchen/car won’t measure up to the British Royal family’s or a movie star’s, the people who would get a magazine spread

Granted I don’t have access to their internal metrics, but some of the deepest cuts were to sports, metro, arts/entertainment and the international desk. Call me crazy, I just don’t believe Washington Post readers were uninterested in their hometown NFL team, local crime, and tv/movie reviews

I don't think football teams can use up all their touchdowns in the way that baseball teams use up their runs, but I don't like seeing IU get a good bounce on a punt in a game like this. Save that luck on the off chance you need it against Miami

I will never understand the argument that losing in the Super Bowl is worse than not getting to play at all. "We've lost in the wild card round four years in a row" does not feel any better, I promise you

1) different schools have different cultures/strengths/priorities, and that’s good, actually. Not everyone is going to thrive in the same environment 2) that being said, the Ivy League is literally a DI athletic conference. The top-ranked private schools absolutely care about sports, spare me

The AP wire includes significantly less coverage of the NBA/NHL than they did just a few years ago. It would be so helpful if the AP had game stories for all Big Ten women’s basketball games, but I realize that’s not at all likely if they can’t get a photographer to every Pacers game

This has tickled me for months. There are auto-bids now! The top five conference champs are in! Notre Dame cannot keep USC out of the Big Ten title game. It’s just that Riley can’t imagine USC winning the Big Ten anytime soon, and who am I to say he’s wrong?
120
Victoria Jacobsen @vicky-jacobsen.bsky.social · 23/12/2025
In that case, if you’re USC, aren’t you left kicking yourself, knowing that had you played you would’ve had the opportunity to beat ND, knock the Irish out of the playoff race and open up a spot for yourself? Wouldn’t you rather have more control over your fate instead of trusting, say, Clemson?
020
Victoria Jacobsen @vicky-jacobsen.bsky.social · 23/12/2025
Ok, so we’re all considering the scenario where the game is played, Notre Dame ends up ranked ahead. Why isn’t USC considering the reverse scenario: They don’t play each other, ND ends up as the fringe-but-in team (10th-12th), and USC, having subbed the ND game for San Jose St, is left out at 13th?
