I gave these a try when my grandchildren were visiting, and they were a big hit. My grandson said they were better than Starbuck’s. Take that, giant corporation! I always enjoy using my own favourites in my books that contain recipes, and this one is found in ‘Tis the Season to be Scary, the latest Year Round Christmas mystery. In the book, bakery owner Vicky Casey caters the dessert portion of

When one lives in a town called Rudolph, Christmas-themed celebrations and life are unsurprisingly the thing, but this time the ho-ho-hos are mixed with the nasty trick of murder when a caterer’s treats for a Halloween charity gala poison an obnoxious guest.  Vicki Delany’s cozy mysteries are not new territory for me, but this particular […]

I don’t know how I missed the eleventh Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery by Vicki Delany. But, darn her anyways. She killed off my favorite suspect in The Devil in the Details. I should have k…

Ah, blueberries. The perfect dessert all on their own and the perfect ingredient for pie!  I might argue that blueberries are the best food of them all.  Feel free to challenge me if you like. This pie is lovely, sort of a cross between a pie and a crumble. I made it when I was having a minor illness, but I had company coming and thought it would be easier for me than rolling out

The perfect side dish for a barbeque or to bring to a pot luck. Sometimes, in our rush to update everything and experiment with textures and flavours and add extravagant decorations, we forget about the tried and true. As they say in literature, the classics are classic for a reason Case in point is these vanilla cupcakes. Simple. Plain, Easy. And absolutely delicious. I made these because my daughter specifically asked for vanilla cupcakes for her birthday

In the Tea by The Sea series, not only does pastry-chef Lily Roberts work hard in Tea by the Sea, her Cape Cod afternoon tea room, but she also makes the breakfasts at Victoria-on-Sea, her grandmother’s B&B. Muffins are always popular at the B&B and Lily can easily whip up extra batches when she has time and freeze them until needed.  Sometimes the extra baking comes in handy when

DARCI HANNAH: It’s the first Sunday in August, and you know what that means, time for another lively discussion around our kitchen table! It’s my turn this month, and I really want to talk about a subject that this summer has become a bit taboo due to an untimely outbreak of Cyclospora that’s hit hard here in Michigan, and all around the United States. For me summer is synonymous with salads. I

This was the easiest cobbler recipe I have ever made!  It took minutes to put it together.  I love blueberries and they were on sale, but thanks to the cyclospora parasite outbreak, we've been warned against eating berries unless they've been cooked.  I had no choice but to turn them into something like a cobbler!  I used two pints of blueberries and next time I think I

LUCY BURDETTE: When my hubby and I visited Key West in 2006, we did not expect to fall in love with the island. But like so many others, we did exactly that, and now we live there half the year. Even more importantly, the characters of the Key West food critic mystery series live and work there too. It’s a quirky and delightful setting and very much real. When I’m trying to figure out the plot

MADDIE DAY here, wishing the spirit of Amelia Earhart a very happy birthday!Yes, our intrepid feminist pilot was born today in Kansas in 1894. As I was writing A Case for the Ladies, I envisioned a fictional reality for Amelia as a sidekick to lady PI Dot Henderson in1926 Boston, where Amelia actually lived and taught in a settlement house. After a short stint teaching English to

Another excellent way of using up those over-ripe bananas.  I made these ahead of a family visit and found that they froze very well.  Just leave them out for about half an hour before eating or give them a quick 10 – 15 seconds in the microwave and breakfast is ready! I used four bananas to make the 2 cups as needed. Most recipes will tell you to prepare the muffin tins. I now use

Darci kindly exchanged days with me so I could wish all my Canadian (and Canadian-friendly) readers a happy Canada Day.  Today marks one hundred and fifty-nine years since Confederation, which on July 1, 1867 brought the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia together into the Dominion of Canada, an independent dominion of the British Empire. Other provinces later

An interesting twist on meatballs for someone who’s looking for something different for dinner one night.  I served this with rice, but noodles should work as well. They were tasty and I’d encourage you to give it a try, if you like, but as for me, I think I prefer my meatballs in proper tomato sauce over pasta. Coconut Curry Meatballs Ingredients: 2/3 cup bread crumbs 1 egg 2

Whose Body in the Library Lighthouse Library Mystery #13 by Eva Gates Release date: June 9th, 2026 🌟🌟🌟🌟 🌟 (4.5 rounded up) I received a complimentary ARC copy of Whose Body in the Library (Lighthouse Library Mystery #13) by Eva Gates from Net Galley and Crooked Lane Books in order to read and give an honest review.   …Nichelle is a welcome, distinct new voice and is a brilliant new angle for the series.

I found the flavour of lemon in this recipe to be too strong, although the dish was delicious.  The lemons I used were very big, so perhaps they were too large. Next time, I’ll cut the amount of lemon.  Obviously, tastes vary. The recipe calls for Orzo, but I didn’t have quite enough. Any rice-sized pasta will do fine. This recipe is very quick and easy.  Enjoy. Garlic Shrimp

CLEO COYLE: There are foods that we eat, and foods that feed our souls. Comfort food classics are the dishes that calm rough days, bring sighs of satisfaction, or maybe take us back to familiar family tables with every bite. What are your top three favorite comfort foods: savory or sweet? Mac and cheese, fried chicken, and mashed potatoes are at the top of the list for my husband Marc. As

Last time I gave you the recipe for the pastry in this modern twist on a lemon meringue pie.  Here’s the filling and meringue topping. Parisian Chocolate Lemon Pie. Part Two: Filling and Topping. Ang Pompano: Eggs in Purgatory, uova in purgatorio, belongs to the great Italian tradition of cucina povera. The phrase translates to “poor kitchen,” but it’s less about scarcity than ingenuity, turning a few simple staples into something that actually satisfies. This is everyday food. The kind you make because you’re hungry and want something good, not because you’re trying to impress anyone.
