A Hawk in a Pine Tree Spying Sparrows Matsu ni taka ni suzume 松に鷹に雀 Katsushika Hokui 1830–60s (Tenpô to Bakumatsu era) MEDIUM/TECHNIQUEHanging scroll; ink and color on paper DIMENSIONSImage: 76.5 x 39.8 cm (30 1/8 x 15 11/16 in.) CREDIT LINEWilliam Sturgis Bigelow Collection

Rendered in ink and delicate color washes upon a vertically oriented paper scroll, A Hawk in a Pine Tree Spying Sparrows (Matsu ni taka ni suzume) presents a tense, dramatic moment of suspended predatory focus. Perched firmly upon the moss-dusted, gnarled branch of an ancient pine tree, a majestic hawk (taka) swivels its head skyward, its wide, golden-ringed eye tracking a pair of sparrows (suzume) fluttering in frantic escape through the upper left quadrant. The hawk’s plumage is rendered with exquisite anatomical precision: stiff, layered wing coverts patterned in dark indigo-grey scale work, a textured white chest, sharp yellow talons gripping the bark, and an sharply hooked beak. Above and below, pine needle clusters (matsu-ba) emerge from knobby branches accented with dark ink dots (ten) representing lichen and moss. To the left, the artist’s signature and square red seal (in) anchor the aged, warm-toned paper field, which exhibits a delicate network of historical creasing and patina.

The painting evokes a taut, electrifying sensory experience: the sudden, rustling snap of pine needles as the sparrows burst into erratic flight, the sharp, whistling rush of wind through needle clusters, the cold, stillness of an early morning forest, and the dry, papery aroma of aged sumi ink and antique mulberry paper suspended within a quiet alcove (tokonoma).

My landlady is currently trying to sell the house where I'm living out from under me. She has had the electricity turned off and is demanding a $600 deposit for me to continue staying here. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. ko-fi.com/alicetherat/...
