a masterful landscape by Shin-hanga artist Kawase Hasui (1883–1957). Titled Morning at Ao Marsh, Ura Heights, the composition captures the ethereal stillness of a mountain marsh at dawn in the scenic Urabandai highland region of Fukushima Prefecture.

The upper half of the composition is dominated by a majestic, sprawling mountain range that rises sharply against a narrow strip of pale blue sky. The peaks are caught in the first warm rays of the morning sun, illuminating the upper ridges in a vibrant, terracotta or rust-orange hue. This sunlit warmth transitions beautifully into deep, velvety indigo and slate-blue shadows within the mountain's steep ravines and valleys, creating an incredible sense of tectonic volume and rugged texture. Nestled directly at the base of these imposing slopes is a quiet, hidden clearing featuring a traditional thatched-roof cottage (minka), half-concealed by a dense cluster of lush foliage. A single, delicate deciduous tree with coral-pink leaves stands just before the house, providing a brilliant pop of seasonal color against the darker, towering evergreens and soft green deciduous canopies that flank the homestead.

The lower half of the frame is an absolute technical marvel of printmaking, dedicated entirely to the glassy, rippling surface of Ao Marsh (Aonuma). The dark, deep indigo water creates a magnificent inverted canvas, capturing a fluid, abstracted reflection of the entire landscape above. Hasui’s design meticulously captures the gentle distortion of the water's surface, using fine, horizontal rippled lines of pale cream, soft green, and warm orange to mirror the sunlit mountain peaks and the surrounding forest. Along the very bottom margin, a band of smooth, pale blue water frames the reflection, grounding the viewer along the marsh's quiet shore.

The Japanese Meiji era (1868–1912) was a period of extraordinary artistic transition, where traditional metalworking skills originally developed for samurai armor were repurposed to create intricate, lifelike "articulated" models known as jizai okimono. This trio of silver models serves as a prime example of the incredible technical precision and anatomical detail achieved by master craftsmen during this time. The collection features a large praying mantis with finely chiseled wings—signed by the artist Muneyoshi beneath the inner wing—alongside a meticulously rendered cicada and a hornet complete with a realistic, protracting sting.
