so this only works for the show but. for cql. i think if jgy found out who was behind his downfall, what they did to bring it about, and why in a situation that didn't involve the person he cared for most in the world being tricked into stabbing him in the chest. I think he would be devastated. Because he does care about nhs, has for a very long time. and the way that care expressed itself was by him protecting nhs and shielding him from the ugly realities of the world so he could continue to be a care-free boy who had elegant hobbies.

the thing he picks for his probable (i can't believe he didn't think this at the time) last words to nhs is "i can't protect you anymore. don't make your brother angry." to me that says that, while nmj wouldn't have, in his own mind, meaningfully harmed his brother, meng yao genuinely thought nhs needed to be protected from him, and committed to doing that, even though nmj held absolute power over his life

and situation. when the wen interrupt the gift ceremony, meng yao puts himself, weak and unarmed as he is, between nhs and potential danger with utmost determination. he comes to get him from yueyang and smooths the situation over for him, and yes this is partially his job, but it's not just his job.

i'm cheating because this is franken-canon and i just said this doesn't work for the novel etc and here i am stealing from that but. the destroying of nhs's things. jgy conspicuously takes nhs's side there, despite having plenty of good incentives to do the opposite.

And i do think the realization that even nhs isn't truly safe anymore (whether this is an accurate read or not, i think it's jgy's read), while partially compounding his belief that he isn't safe, also spurs him to action because he's worried about nhs. Like. I don't think he kills nmj for nhs, but I do think the belief that nmj was capable of harming his brother was part of the decision.

And, again, I know this is cheating, and that I am picking and choosing things to support my argument but my argument makes everything more painful and so I think I therefore should be allowed: if we take zzj's statement that jgy's biggest regret is letting nhs see his brother die, and then look at jgy holding nhs back not as sinister but as a like... for all he knows, nmj can't recognize his brother. he can't tell the difference between jgy and a pillar, it's just not a safe bet! So, as protecting nhs from harm. He's, again, doing everything he can to keep nhs from having to see and be involved in and potentially be hurt by all of this.

And then he helps him run his sect and does his taxes and takes care of him for years when he absolutely does not have to and does not have time for any of this!

And I just... He went to such effort not just to protect nhs physically but to protect his naivete/innocence, to keep him from having to become someone nhs had said he didn't want to be. And partially through this

said he didn't want to be. And partially through this protection, he managed to turn nhs into a callous, cynical, joyless, and cold person, which is the opposite of what he was trying to do.

so like. In the moment, yes murderous rage. If he found out in a situation where he was in exile or had successfully faked his own death or after being resurrected or something? I think he'd just be deeply, painfully sad.
