indeed
A close-up photograph of a white book designed to resemble a matchbox, with a red-and-black match lying beside it.

Printed on the cover is Ray Bradbury’s quotation:

“You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.”

The quotation comes from his essay “Afterword: Coda”, later appended to "Fahrenheit 451".

Not really, no. It's a 1981 observation that shortcuts don't always work and learning requires personal effort. The machine doesn't teach — it dispenses. But the full illustration reveals the real irony: the effort hasn't disappeared; it's merely been transferred to somebody else.

For visual learners: This amount of 20 pierogi constitutes what is called a standard serving in my family 😋

It's a bit more complicated because the tree is real but the photo shared isn't. Here's the original, dating back to 2004.

The sketch on the left is real. It's a Prix Godeboeuf shop sign by Henry de Bosset from 1904. The image on the right is an AI-generated vision.

I didn't realise how many photos of sheep I've got on my phone! This one is one of my oldest and, I think, the best. It was such a miserable, monochromatic day—but just look at her! 🐑
An overly fluffy sheep posing for a photo somewhere in Devonshire. Even though the colours are subdued making everything rather monochromatic, she looks straight at the photographer in all her fluffy glory!

I really like the way you've organised your observations in this book. The chapter 'In a café' is like a warm cinnamon bun. I love it! And I think you found another Brian 😉

It's a murder of crows but an unkindness (also conspiracy) of ravens.
How birds got their strange collective nouns

As author Chloe Rhodes explains in An Unkindness of Ravens: A Book of Collective Nouns, unlike proverbs, rhymes or homilies, many of these words endure because they were recorded and published in Books of Courtesy handbooks designed to educate the nobility. ‘They were created and perpetuated as a means of marking out the aristocracy from the less well-bred masses,’ she writes.

Fun Fact: there's a street in Warsaw (Poland) named after Winnie the Pooh! It was built in the 1950s. The name was chosen by children in a daily paper competition.

This is so spot on. Apparently, screenwriters are advised by Netflix not to include too much in one scene because the public can't follow the plot—due to the fact that they do other stuff while watching! The attention span of a fruit fly...
