neither Ottoman nor a mullah; his name was not Ahmed, and he had never conducted hajj. This article is a microhistory that follows Hajji Ahmed on his journey in tsarist Turkestan, the Khanate of Khoqand, and the Emirate of Bukhara in the 1870s. (2)

This roundtable article builds on my first book, Empire of Refugees (@stanfordpress.bsky.social, 2024), and offers a glimpse into my second book project on hijra, or Muslim refugee migration, across Eurasia in the modern era. (2) www.sup.org/books/middle...

My new article, “Letters from the Ottoman Empire: Migration from the Caucasus and Russia’s Pan-Islamic Panic,” has been published by Slavic Review. For years, I have been searching for Muslim refugees’ letters exchanged across the Russo-Ottoman border in the 1850s–1914. doi.org/10.1017/slr.... (1)

Happy to share my new article on the attempted return of the North Caucasian diaspora in the Middle East to its homeland within the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation since the 1960s, published in Kritika. doi.org/10.1353/kri....
This map, published by the Turkish-Circassian journal Kamçı in 1970, introduces the convoluted political geography of the Soviet North Caucasus (plus Abkhazia and South Ossetia) to the North Caucasian diaspora in Turkey.
