The soft deposits around Flag Fen were well suited to augering. Aside from a dry plough soil and compacted alluvial cover, the deposit sequence was made up of malleable peats, silty peats, organic silts and sandy clays. A buried soil horizon was recorded in most auger holes. Photo: Emma Bothamley
