20 years ago today, at 11:15 PM EST, an important milestone in VGMdb history was reached: our first album page was submitted. It was technically the third album page, but the first two pages were database tests that were deleted. I chose the Final Fantasy VII Original Soundtrack because it was a favorite of mine, but it is also a fitting tribute to the impact that this soundtrack had in inspiring new game music fans. Of course, at that time, we were an experimental special project on Gamingforce Audio, and it would be a little more than a year before we relaunched as VGMdb.

It is interesting to reflect back over the last two decades, and examine how much our coverage has matured. Our scope broadened to include animation around 2009, as we re-branded to "The Music of Visual Arts and Games." The scope of our coverage would see further adjustment over the years, and while this has posed challenges at times, our central pillar has been and always will be game music. In parallel to this, our ontology has become steadily more detailed as we added a flexible artist crediting system that really glues together the album, product, and publisher pages.

There are more than 158,000 album pages on VGMdb, spanning over 3 million individual tracks, and almost as many artist credit links. It would not have been possible to catalog all of this information without the help of public editors, and in fact, there are 6161 individual accounts that have submitted data to VGMdb. We are eternally thankful for all of your contributions, and more so for being patient during the evolution of our more stringent requirements for sourcing and accuracy.

So, as we near our official 20th anniversary, we at VGMdb are excited about the future. There are some things moving behind the scenes that we are looking forward to sharing with you soon.

We're saddened to hear of the passing of VNDB's founder Yorhel. Both VNDB and VGMdb launched in the same year, united by a shared goal of preserving niche parts of gaming history that might otherwise be lost. Yorhel's work leaves a lasting legacy. Our thoughts are with the VNDB community.

Due to a significant increase in aggressive bot activity over the past year, we have implemented new measures to improve site stability and reduce lag. Effective immediately, an account is required to view the discussion forums. The database (albums, artists, etc.) is still fully public, as always.

Development of an official VGMdb API has been in progress for some time, and we're aiming to launch it next year. This API will make it easier for developers to integrate VGMdb's data, such as album details, artist information, and tracklists, into their own apps or websites. Stay tuned for updates.

We've been eager to add support for additional languages, especially Japanese, since 80% of albums on VGMdb come from Japan. Our goal is to roll out language options in 2025, starting with Japanese and French. If you're interested in helping add more languages, please join our Discord and DM cal.

We have identified an issue that has been preventing the automatic archiving of submission links for the past six weeks. A fix has just been implemented, but it will take some time for the system to process and archive the missed links. Please note that site operations remain unaffected.

If there's enough interest, we might set up a separate account to automatically post updates about new releases added to our database. We used to do this on Twitter, but we had to stop due to changes to their API policies.
