It really varies a lot. Here in Sweden, I lucked out by finding a good budget brand early (actually liked it more than expensive ones) whereas all other budget brands I've tried were really bad. Also imported from Germany! (Coop X-tra, made by Deutsche Extrakt Kaffee GmBH).

It's basically a thermal printer that can apply two different levels of heat, combined with a special receipt paper that turns black or red depending on the heat applied. There seems to be orange+black and blue+black variants as well. www.zywell.net/dual-color-t...

(The illustration above is for "full" red-green color blindness. There are less severe variants where red-sensitive cells are still there, but with weaker detection "performance".)

It's not so strange when you look into how color vision works. There are three kinds of color-sensitive cells, and the kind with specific sensitivity to red light is largely absent in people with "red-green color blindness".
Illustration from the Wikipedia article on congenital red–green color blindness. Caption: Retinal mosaic in the fovea of an individual with normal color vision (left), and protanopia (right). The protanope is completely missing red cones and is therefore a dichromat.

Interesting, I remember the text looking pretty crisp with the default color scheme. Maybe its CRT has drifted out of focus a bit with age?

A local store had one when I was a kid. I remember it was pretty much a C64, but inexplicably used the VIC-20 color scheme (white background, cyan border, and blue text) on startup. Thinking about it now, I wonder if the C64 color scheme was hard to read on that monitor for some reason?

But it's about performing arts and popular culture, not about creating art in general. A painter, sculptor, or author would not be called an "artist" in Swedish. A closer English equivalent would be "performer".

Xenovance @vgebler.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
We do. It's not really limited to singing, but also applies more widely to performing in a show. A member of a rock/pop group would be considered an "artist" even if they don't sing. The term could also apply to dancers, comedians, and magicians who perform as part of a show.

I can't keep up with new releases at all, so they just keep piling up. Elden Ring was the first I thought of, then GTA V. But I've never had a Nintendo console, so that's probably the biggest blind spot.

I see two ways to make it work: 1) "Different position and orientation" could mean "different position and different orientation" but also "different combination of position and orientation". 2) Orientation could be measured relative to a fix point, like a compass heading. Then it would change.

(I believe the internal drive I had was from Conner, not Iomega. The cartridges were much narrower than the slot in your picture. Got it used with a bunch of tapes included. Better than doing backups on floppies, but pretty inconvenient to use regularly.)

Xenovance @vgebler.bsky.social · 05/08/2025
Yeah, I had one that connected to the floppy controller(!). Slow and clunky, and the tapes it supported (QIC-40/QIC-80) didn't have the capacity to back up my hard drive on a single tape. Later got an Iomega Ditto Max to replace it, but that was external, attaching to the parallel port (EPP).

I believe there are many examples, but HDMI is a good one, with people experiencing strange intermittent problems that they think can't possibly be due to a bad cable, then get super surprised when it turned out to be due to a bad cable.

That digital signals can be affected by problems in the analog domain, often resulting in something between "works perfectly" and "doesn't work at all". Yes, each bit is either 0 or 1, but what happens when there are billions of bits and some are wrong?

A relative humidity of 100% refers to the maximum concentration of water in air before any of it falls out as precipitation/condensation (disregarding unstable conditions such as supersaturation). So it's sort of a natural upper bound for gaseous air. It varies with temperature and air pressure.

Beautiful, but the 25 fps is a little unfortunate, causing judder on a 60 Hz monitor (like mine, but I would think it's still the most common refresh rate among viewers).

Did they apologize? As an occasionally scatter-brained person I can see how it could happen by mistake, simply forgetting to do the last step of the original plan. But then I would apologize profusely and explain myself.

Xenovance @vgebler.bsky.social · 18/05/2025

Xenovance @vgebler.bsky.social · 18/05/2025

They probably write in a way that doesn't require "primo writing brain" at all times. Like getting into a flow state and let the writing unfold without sweating the details, producing a first version that can then be refined (and maybe not requiring your "primo writing brain" for that either).

I don't actually mind the blur in the left picture, probably because reflections in puddles tend to be muddled in real life. I have no intuition for exactly *how* they would be muddled, so the artifice doesn't stand out. But the graininess in the right picture *does* stand out as artificial to me.

Then, the practice I've already had together with some additional tips is typically enough to beat the boss. Not ideal, but better than just skipping the fight, I think. And I often learn things that leave me better equipped to manage future boss fights without help.

My go-to compromise in recent years has been to look up boss strategies when it feels like figuring them out myself would involve too much dying. I wouldn't need to die 17 times before resorting to that, but maybe more than 3 times.

...and this, right under it:
Partial screenshot of Google search result page, subsection "People also ask", quoting a seemingly appropriate dictionary entry from dictionary.com:

What does umbral mean?

adjective. of or like a shadow or shadowy apparition: Smoke was rising and beginning to coat the clouds a deep, umbral black. In an instant the vampire's corporeal form dematerialized into an umbral form that quickly merged with the surrounding cover of night.

Going by the alt text, I think you misinterpret Google's response. It's not explaining what "nombre" means in Spanish, but what "umbral" means in Spanish. It gives two meanings, and "Nombre masculino" is part of both (meaning "masculine noun"). If asked for the English meaning, you get this:
Screenshot showing Google's "featured snippet" when searching for "meaning of umbral in English":

shadow

Umbral is derived from the Latin word umbra, meaning "shadow". It is also the Spanish and Portuguese word for "threshold" and is sometimes used as a surname in those languages.

Yeah, on the VIC-20. I had a photocopy of all the opcodes in hex, and converted them to decimal for use in DATA statements. Unlike the PET, the VIC-20 didn't have a built-in monitor for such things. Still remember some opcodes in decimal for that reason (e.g. LDA# being 169 and JMP being 76).

I agree that it looks a little fake. Photos are often digitally "enhanced" these days, for more vivid colors and greater contrast, to the point that it doesn't look very natural. Perhaps it's just that, or some sort of composite. The thumbnail for the video I linked to looks more natural, I think.
