And it almost goes without saying that "gate guards" irl are completely hollowed out shells and are in no way fully functional airplanes. Then again Delta also contrived the idea that Wright Immelmann's VF-22 was restored to flying condition even though it was just on display...

The mangaka did show that he referenced the (now old) Revoltech VF-1J for this scene. Also I have to wonder if any of the manga plots were proposed ideas for the anime that got changed or reworked. I'm eager to see the read it with a proper English translation soon.

So the manga got this story first and it was different than the episode. Instead there was a fanboy group chasing Sheryl so Alto hid her in the VF-1J at the top of the school. Its mounting was damaged from the prior Varja attack and Alto had to transform it to avoid crushing Ranka.

What's funny is that almost everything high school related gets abruptly phased out of the show lol Even Code Geass kept up with it longer.

030

Cue the Benny Mardones song.

no Messer is the Delta guy ;3

000

Ai-kun even being in this show was kind of a throwback to a trend that started in the 90s haha Also let's remember Brera's "regular" clothes are somehow more ridiculous than his pilot suit.

Ironically Alto is the straight man in a world gone goofy.

011

Oddly enough this episode confirmed that the VF-1 on Mihoshi Academy's roof is Hikari's VF-1A.

Double kabe *destruction*

Sheryl turned from Ranka's idol into her rival.

051

Why doesn't she just grab a fresh towel and use that as underwear? Or like literally anything more than this lol

Revisiting this episode, I think all of the character stuff is a lot stronger than I remember but the sudden swerve into a panty chase really overshadows the good lol

People talk about Surf Dracula, but did you know Captain N had a Skate Alucard

Alucard from the Captain N cartoon. He is a blond vampire wearing a T-shirt, jeans, sneakers, sunglasses, and a vampire cape. He is riding a bat-shaped skateboard.

IIRC, Kawamori made sure to clarify that it was the series director who really (really) wanted to do this episode.

This episode is actually about how Studio Nue has come full circle from drawing the definitive version of the Powered Suit to depicting this technology as common enough for teenagers to use. Also Miyatake's comments on Orguss confirms he absolutely approves of cute girls in mecha :3d

042

I should add this to the Alto getting shot down tally.

060

And this is where Sheryl finds out Alto is the princess.

082

Don't you mean Alto's your Boba Fett's Starship?

050

They want each other.

You can just feel the irritation in this photo.

021

This episode is notorious for how off model everyone looks. It's like they turned into One Piece characters. The animation is lively at least.

I've never seen a guy more born to be in the friend zone than Luca.

Alto is thinking, "Should I tell him that Nanase is gayer than a seven colored carrot?"

I'm not sure if they ever intend to explain why Mylene is never seen in clash but Macross 7 Trash showed that kids attend school in virtual reality pods so they only have to go for events. Frontier shows Mihoshi Academy being more traditional (but all the courses are about Macross related things).
