Hypnagogic Peacock is now open for submissions. The journal publishes vesical work. Writing and research that is constituted by its in-between-ness. Work that not only refuses the available containers but smashes them and flosses its teeth with the fragments. vesicapress.co.uk/submit

What is the work that has no name yet? Hypnagogic Peacock — the Vesica Press journal — opens for submissions in September and I am on the hunt for creators of work that has no name. Writing and research that has gone somewhere the available categories cannot follow.

I'm not just building a press but a community. The most exciting writing, the most radical research, is out there struggling to find a home. The creators of this work need a place to nurture creativity, expand ideas and ask what if...? to a bunch of like-minded folk who are also asking.

Hypnagogic Peacock, the press's bi-annual journal, opens for submissions in September this year. If you're not sure if your work fits (and if you're not sure that's a good indication that it just might) head on over to the Vesica Press website. vesicapress.co.uk/submit

Vesica Press is looking for work that refuses classification. Creative criticism, poetic non-fiction, practice research, prose poetry, poetic prose, lyric essays... Take these words, jumble them up, take two, three, four at random and that's what I want. If you can't name it, I'll read it.

The latest Vesica Press essay looks to Claude Cahun's genre-defying Disavowals as a handbook for vesical work. Want to know what the press is looking for? This essay lays out some selection criteria. open.substack.com/pub/vesicapr...

It does. The inability to name it is not a failure of the work. It is evidence that the work has gone somewhere the available categories were not built to go. Hypnagogic Peacock, Vesica Press's journal, opens for submissions September 2026. vesicapress.co.uk/submit

The most persistent question I get as an editor is some version of: what is this? The writer knows it is not quite a poem, not quite an essay, not quite criticism. What they're really asking is: does this have a right to exist?

My piece in this month's Univocity Drift. A taxonomy of nonsense — four categories, a self-undermining footnote, and further research indicated. This is what I mean by vesical work. (Vesica Press EIC and self-professed nonsense generator) open.substack.com/pub/univocit...

Vesical work: a manifesto for writing that lives in the overlap. If you're curious about vesical knowing you can read the latest Vesica Press substack essay below. In-between-ness. Monstrous conjunctions. Work that refuses to stay in its lane. open.substack.com/pub/vesicapr...

On Vesical Work — and Why I Coined a Term
A manifesto for the writing that lives in the overlap

Hybrid writing is not simply two things added together. It's a third thing. But the term 'hybrid' has become diluted, flat. Vesical work is what we call the third. The in-between-ness. Remove an element and the whole work collapses. The test is not what the work contains but what it requires.

The most interesting work being made has nowhere to go. Not because it's not ready. Because the available categories were built for a different kind of making. Hypnagogic Peacock exists for that work. We call it vesical — work that lives in the overlap, the space no single category makes.

There is work being produced right now that cannot find a home - not because it isn't good but because the categories used to organise publishing were built for a different kind of making. What kind of writing have you made that had nowhere to go? Hypnagogic Peacock - Submissions September 2026.

I just added @vesicapress.bsky.social and @pizamapress.bsky.social to my Hybrid Writing Starter Pack - few places still left for those who write or publish writing that can't be neatly labelled or boxed in! go.bsky.app/MswLLwc

We do not want your work explained. If it requires explanation it is not ready. What work have you been sitting on because you cannot explain it? Hypnagogic Peacock opens for submissions September 2026.

We are looking for the essay that enacts. The prose that breaks. The poem that thinks. If you write in the territory of Michaux, Carson, Celan, Lispector - this journal is for you. vesicapress.co.uk/submit

Writing that sits cleanly in a single category probably isn't right for us. Writing that does something the writer cannot entirely account for probably is.

The vesica piscus is the figure produced when two circles overlap. Neither circle alone produces it. That is the only editorial principle we hold to.

The essay that thinks in images. The poem that is also an argument. The research that has found a form the institution did not provide. Writing that is formally strange because it had to be. Read about what Vesica Press stands for on Substack. vesicapress.substack.com/p/for-the-wo...

Vesica Press is now live. Publishing work that cannot be published anywhere else. Not because it is difficult, but because it refuses the categories that would make it easy. Poetry. Hybrid writing. Creative-critical work. Practice-based research. The third thing. vesicapress.co.uk
