After reading Spineless I couldn’t resist diving right into Samantha San Miguel’s follow-up novel, Fathomless. Pirates, ghosts, natural science, and mystery abound in this historical fantasy set in a fictitious gilded age Florida. Readers are reacquainted with Algie, Lulu, and Frankie with Lulu driving the narration this time around. We also meet Vic, a young boy who became blind after an illness. Lulu and Vic quickly bond over their desire to show everyone they are just as capable as anyone else despite how their family may view them. In Lulu’s case, this also includes a battle against her own self-perception. Fathomless takes all the adventurous elements of Spineless and adds generous portions of emotional growth alongside a message about the importance of communicating clearly.#middlegradefiction #mgbookstagram #ghosts #pirates
