I’m not someone who is a savant. I just have negotiated enterprise tech contracts and had to deal with third party software dependencies. No one ever wants to think about the fact that someday they will have to pay actual money for software they get to use for free… and yet.

not in that thread, but I am just an ex-tech guy who was in rooms in 2022 like “man I dunno about building a feature dependent on a third party API bc the long term costs of enterprise licensing this seem pretty questionable even if it’s being subsidized by VC money right now?”

this isn’t really something you can both sides, and it’s not even about the limits or harms of the technology. gen AI has literally never been economically viable. go look up any article about anthropic’s s-1 filing, it’s not like you gotta take my word for this one.

like we are so far past “we just have to find a way to live with it.” the math doesn’t math. literally they got ed z on Bloomberg news now. yeah I am worried about the future but not bc of the lies these companies tell you to make you believe these models are powerful.

Just an update that I talked to Meg's mom, who has also spoken with Meg on the phone - sounds like Meg doesn't have a charger for their phone right now, but is getting good care where they are.

imo this type of messaging speaks to some very poor technical literacy and also just sounds like a lesswrong blog commenter from 2012. Science fantasy is cool but also sometimes people are just a little too horny to be subjugated by big computer.
