Hampton’s legacy is starting to be sanitized by mainstream politicians, in much the same way that MLK Jr’s legacy has been. Never forget that Hampton was first and foremost a revolutionary. He believed in the power of class solidarity and was staunchly anti-capitalist in his messaging.

On the night of Hampton’s murder, he had already been drugged with barbiturates. He was unconscious while the Chicago police entered his home, dragged his pregnant girlfriend out of the room, and shot him in the chest and head.

55 years ago today, the Chicago police and the FBI worked together to assassinate Fred Hampton, along with fellow Black Panther Mark Clark. At just 21 years old, Hampton was the chairman of the Illinois BPP, the deputy chairman of the national BPP, and had helped found the Rainbow Coalition.
