In some ways, the kid - Viktor, and not really a kid except for all the ways he is - reminds him of Silco, a righteous fury that chipped and scratched and refused to be broken. But if he’s being honest with himself, Vik reminds him more of, well, himself. Desperate to not be helpless, pouring energy reserves into attempted shows of strength that were too earnest to ever work.

Vander idly presses at his back; the deeper scratches bite him a little in the open air, and he slips back into bed with a sigh before he can get too in his head about all of it.

The kid picked a good time to call - Silco is at his most agreeable in between orgasms, soft and idealistic with acute post-nut clarity. When Vander settles on his back, Silco slinks over to rest halfway on top of him, bony fingers stroking the curve of his left tit. Because you’re a pervert who’s into that kind of thing, Silco always huffs, like Vander can’t feel him acclimating all the way down to his steady heartbeat.

“Your protégé?” he drawls, intact eye amused and knowing, and Vander grunts a confirmation.

That had been their agreement: in the midst of Silco spending all hours obsessing over taking down CEOs from the inside, ignoring his health, having his nudes leaked, and chasing martial justice in the dumbest way possible — events he was too busy with to process Vander’s second suicide attempt — they separated, maybe for good, with one melodramatic ultimatum: use this blood money to better yourself.

For Silco, it was the removal of his glaucous eye, a commitment to less flashy, more sustainable rebellion that didn’t require the soul-destroying work of pretending capitalism was cool, and a cat to take care of.

Vander got a couple of new prescriptions, a gig as a dungeon monitor, and the Week of Progress.

They’re honestly kind of broke now, but it never really felt like his money to spend anyway, and Vander is just glad they both survived it. Between both of their individual attempts to urge Jinx to take some of the money just in case and her explosive responses, this week away is about the last of it.

It had been fun to roleplay being rich for a little while, but it’s actually more fun to be happy, an inconvenient truth Silco to this day pretends he knew all along.

It would’ve worked, Silco insists of his plan, like it hadn’t almost killed them both. But Vander finds it endearing. He feels it as a cosmic balance — Finn called it ‘shacking up with an Aries.’

It brings them here: Silco blind in one eye, using a lacquered cane to get around that Vander finds genuinely super hot, especially because Silco has implied the existence of a sword inside — and Vander with what they refer to as his little ducklings, men who may as well be boys, fighting tooth and nail to grow up and teach themselves compassion in a world that increasingly rewards ignorance and cruelty.

“How is he?”

Vander sighs. “Anxious.”

Silco, because he’s kind of an asshole, snorts indelicately into Vander’s chest hair.

“Hey, don’t shit-talk him. Maybe he could help you with that — uh, what is it? Cyber-security? A firewall?”

There’s a little wet rut against Vander’s thigh, and a groan. “It turns me on beyond reason that you don’t know how technology works.”

“Good, ‘cause I’m not about to learn.”
