Many wars, folded into one. (From the @wpr.bsky.social Daily Review.)
Ukraine, Russia: Yandex, the tech company often called “Russia’s Google,” has seen its facilities struck by Ukrainian airstrikes for the third time this week, with the latest attack hitting a data center near Moscow on Sunday. Kyiv’s strikes—which were in retaliation to Moscow’s attacks on Ukrainian data centers—were followed by a sharp drop in automated bot activity, prompting some analysts to speculate whether Yandex’s outages had disrupted Russia’s influence operations overseas.

Zonet in Gent Sint-Pieters. #CurbCutEffect

Do you know the Belgian equivalent of the OV-fiets? It’s the “Blue Bike” and you can find them at all large and medium train stations. I’m quite an avid user, both professionally and personally. blue-bike.be/en/

Those misting arches are also a thing in Vienna, where they attach them to fire hydrants. Together with many places to tap drinking water, this seems so civilised and plain human.

This can’t be repeated enough. As a society, we are far too negligent when it comes to real, decisive measures that can reduce road casualties to zero. Shameful.

Visualising extreme heat climateoutreach.org/visualising-...
1. Extreme heat is not fun.

Images of people splashing in fountains, swimming at beaches and pools and eating ice cream are a long-time staple of stories about heatwaves and hot days. They are easy to shoot, particularly at short notice, and can make for bright, colorful pictures. But they are not a full or accurate reflection of the growing level of risk associated with extreme heat, now a bigger killer than floods, storms, drought and other climate-fueled events. Portraying heat simply as fun can reduce perceptions of extreme heat risk and miss an opportunity to help people better understand a growing threat.

2. Extreme heat is more than a weather story.

Photographs of extreme heat should not just be stand-alone weather pictures but instead tell stories about how high temperatures affect aspects of everyday life, from health and transport to jobs and businesses. They should be engaging and easy to relate to, and provide enough context, detail and nuance.Photo with description: "Asha Devi sweats inside a state-run childcare facility where she teaches. The facility is closed due to the heatwave, in Ambedkar Nagar, New Delhi, June 2024, India."
