#23: Reveal Characters Through Other People’s Perceptions of Them - Katherine Cowley
In the past two lessons, I talked about how Jane Austen reveals characters through moments of tension and through character dialogue. Yet there is another method which she frequently uses to introduce and reveal characters to the reader: through the perceptions of others.

A comic by (I believe) alwizards_Corner/Alwizard. Six panels (3 rows of 2).

Panel 1 shows a man on his knees thinking "The wound is deep, but now is not my time to die."

Panel 2 shows him looking determined, thinking, "My plot armor as a named character is stronger than--"

Panel 3 shows another man step in and say, "As a final gesture, I willt ell you my name. Know that Mane McVillnn sent you to hell."

Panel 4 shows a young man being held back by two guards shouting, "No, my mentor character! His death would be tragic! But also, a huge step in my personal development!"

Panel 5 shows the wounded man looking confused as it starts to rain.

Panel 6 shows the wounded man looking distraught as the rain increases and pours down his face.

#11: Use Exposition to Set the Stage - Katherine Cowley
Soniah Kamal’s novel Unmarriageable, an incredible retelling of Pride and Prejudice in modern-day Pakistan, opens with Alysba Binat (our Elizabeth counterpart) teaching Pride and Prejudice at an English-speaking high school in Pakistan. In the beginning scene, she has her students—all female—write their own first lines inspired by the first line of Pride and Prejudice, their own “truths universally acknowledged.” As Alys leads the discussion, she brings up double-standards for men and women, explains that women’s independence is not a Western idea and has roots in their own culture, and raises the possibility that a woman’s sole purpose is not to marry and have children.
