Help! Parton Community Council has 60 days to raise £70k to buy Parton Kirk (resting place of James Clerk Maxwell). They plan to turn it into a visitor centre celebrating our great hero! The other buyers could turn it into long-term storage 😬 Even £5 would help 🙏🧪⚛️ www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding...

They already discussed boycotting 1936 Olympics since there was known persecution of Jews already. 1940 and 1944 were cancelled rather than boycotted. But maybe we learned from history… well I keep hoping that but then I keep getting surprised by the news with another fascist horror story.

true, but should we then not focus more on the quality of the proposal, as long as the candidate has at least a reasonable publication record? This was for a postdoc fellowship where anyways your publication record is heavily shaped by the policy of your PhD supervisors lab.

Vera Marie Titze @veratitze.bsky.social · 19/01/2026
I will defend the reviewer who said something like "quantity is limited yet appropriate for career stage and quality is exceptionally high" - yet the panel turned that into "publication record is limited" which was then basis for rejection while admitting the proposal was clear and thorough.

Vera Marie Titze @veratitze.bsky.social · 19/01/2026
Sadly, last year my fellowship application was rejected for lack of quantity despite reviewers pointing out high scientific quality of both the proposal and my publications (incl a corresponding author one…). That was very frustrating. I hope that panels reevaluate their priorities esp nowadays 👩🏼‍🔬🧪

Interesting. On the other hand teaching how to use something responsibly might be better than excluding it from teaching altogether. They will use it anyways right? Be it drugs, abortion etc (not to imply these are all wrong) - it usually doesn’t make things more safe to just forbid.

Interesting! I don’t know how I feel about it. In part, I like it because labs have quite different policies for authorship when it comes to early-career non-first author. So having the metrics be heavily influenced by these middle-authorships also does not seem fair.

I have followed the #RoyalSociety #Musk fellowship case over the last months, which culminated in this disappointment: www.theguardian.com/technology/2025… As a consequence […] [Original post on datasci.social]
Dear Editor,

Thank you for asking me to referee this paper.

As much as I would like to accept your invitation, I have decided not to referee any article that is published by the Royal Society, after the Society's decision to keep Elon Musk as its fellow (see: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2025/mar/25/royal-society-decides-not-to-take-disciplinary-action-against-elon-musk).

Elon Musk is leading a large-scale effort to destroy science and its benefits to humanity, therefore he is the anti-thesis to the Society's mission "to recognise, promote and support excellence in science and to encourage the development and use of science for the benefit of humanity". Fellows of the Royal Society argued that revoking Musk’s fellowship could undermine trust in science. Unfortunately, not revoking Musk's fellowship has underminded my trust in the Royal Society. The Royal Society is free to keep Musk's fellowship; in turn I am free to not provide my free labor to the Royal Society.

So for MEEP there is a conda package which works with Linux and Mac; but for windows only with Ubuntu from what I gather. That is somewhat difficult for this project which is supposed to run on a PC with limited admin rights etc - so the less “tinkering” involved, the better…

Vera Marie Titze @veratitze.bsky.social · 07/03/2025
Thanks, we looked at MEEP but apparently you need Linux / Ubuntu which unfortunately poses a problem for us. Just out of curiosity, what’s your case against the open-source FDTD codes?

DNA Sensing with Whispering Gallery Mode Microlasers
Nucleic acid sensing is crucial for advancing diagnostics, therapeutic monitoring, and molecular biology research by enabling the precise identification of DNA and RNA interactions. Here, we present an innovative sensing platform based on DNA-functionalized whispering gallery mode (WGM) microlasers. By correlating spectral shifts in laser emission to changes in the refractive index, we demonstrate real-time detection of DNA hybridization and structural changes. The addition of gold nanoparticles to the DNA strands significantly enhances sensitivity, and exclusively labeling the sensing strand or a hairpin strand eliminates the need for secondary labeling of the target strand. We further show that ionic strength influences DNA compactness, and we introduce a hairpin-based system as a dual-purpose sensor and controlled release mechanism for drug delivery. This versatile WGM-based platform offers promise for sequence-specific nucleic acid sensing, multiplexed detection, and in vivo applications in diagnostics and cellular research.
