So sounds like 18 yo you would agree with? I also intent to exclude sexual reassignment surgery as trans folks have strong evidence-based justifications for such surgery and I think religious folk should have to provide the same level of justification or open themselves up to litigation.

Yeah if you wanna get it done as an adult go for it. Teens? I’d argue the cutoff could be 21 but to be safe 18 yo. That would be a way different world with more bodily autonomy gained than parents assigning genital mutilation at birth or days after.

It might take some time, but I think banning the itor large compensation packages could get us to where we are in the U.S. with FGM (www.justice.gov/archives/opa...) there have been indictments for FGM but it is not as widespread as MGM so there could be a cultural shift (or a hit to the pocketbook

It’s a bad thing because it carries a risk of death (publications.aap.org/pediatrics/a...) and diminished sexual pleasure (www.reuters.com/article/busi...). Religious sects may choose to continue the practice but I suspect there would be more lawsuits if banned and possible arrests like with FGM.

It could be gone in the U.S. if we decide to ban it, or at least find compensation for people as described in this lawsuit. “Based on religious practice” “cutting off a baby’s foreskin based on religious practice” “cutting off a baby’s clitoris based on religious practice” seems like a bad thing

Sure, in another society/culture/laws about such, people can make their rules or norms (it still causes harm) but I think it should be banned in US because harm and the sexual pleasure it precludes people from. I’m only using the boy/girl thing to help stir up a response and broaden the scope.

It’s cool that a lawsuit about this is coming about but the argument isn’t that interesting or nuanced. Circumcision was brought about by religious fanatics to downregulate male sexual pleasure. Replace foreskin with cutting a baby girls clitoris and that realization is how you should be feeling.

It’s so nice to see the majority of people cooking Hank on this. Hank is a gifted data driven speaker but his blind spot is “people really want that so it’s going to be too hard to change” he’s said the same with veganism even though he recognizes it as the most important way to reduce emissions.

It’s emotivism and in the disinformation environment, it may be necessary for big talking heads to distinguish better from what people say they want between their fleshed out answer to many possibilities. I think by all measures, cities are better for human flourishing but marketing is powerful.
