There are so many ways to invites kids' curiosities, nurture their learning, and still hit standards. I do agree w/ author, we need to eliminate the stronghold standardized assessment has on public education (and US education in general). Otherwise we cede joy& play to conformity and compliance. (4)

Curricula tells kids their curiosities don't matter, emphasizing non-fiction text comprehension. Then there is so much boring kid-ified non-fiction text; when they could be reading news, magazines, listening to podcasts, watching films, interpreting maps, biographies, narratives, and more (3)

The writers' illustration of sucking the joy out of reading re: reading a para from Amelia Bedelia versus the book, is spot on. Instead of nurturing reading for the sake of reading; they are obsessed with comprehension. There is no acknowledgement that literacies are social practices. (2)

When reading time is called 'focus', when the books are BORING (I'm looking at you Orton gillingham, jack jumps up, jack jumps down), or when there isn't time to explore books that are interesting to them ... of course reading would feel onerous, boring, and connected to assessment (1)

If I was a middle or HS teacher I would have my students design components of a multimodal science curriculum focused on climate change to send to friends & family in Florida that was experiential, embodied and critical. Then make it free and send physical copies to anyone who signed up.

Just sharing this one more time. Join us for Public Study — an exploration of alternative schools and learning communities across NYC — this fall; applications are due August 7! crc.metro.org/apply/
A card featuring an illustration of cubist forms making art; text: Fall 2026: Public Study: Applications due Aug 7 11:59pm ET; Cross-Reference Coalition" Green card with text reading; Public Study, led by Dr. Shannon Mattern, Wednesdays 3:30 to 6pm, Sept 23 - Dec 9; As institutional higher education faces proliferating threats, and as formal learning becomes ever-more instrumental and ever-less convivial, we’ve observed the propagation of alternative schools, study groups, and intentional learning communities. These collectives offer opportunities for liberatory, mutualistic education; for acknowledging the world’s brokenness and imagining its repair or reinvention. This recent activity builds on a long and multifarious legacy of para- or anti-institutional schools. Our Fall 2026 CRC course, “Public Study,” will examine the past, present, and future of popular, alternative, and radical education — particularly as they shape the intellectual, political, and cultural landscape of New York City; and as they’ve intersected with established cultural heritage and educational institutions. We’ll index local resources and address the roles that libraries and archives — both formal and informal — have played, do play, and could play within this pedagogical ecology.

In the months following our final session we’ll work together on a collaborative project — one shaped by our course theme; by our communities’ (particularly METRO members’!) needs; and by your interests, skills, and bandwidth. We’ll consider potential formats: a field guide, atlas, or card catalog of local experimental schools; a speculative curriculum; or some other pedagogical form. From January through June, we’ll meet periodically — individually and as a collective — to plan, refine, produce, and release our project.
Another card with photos from previous classes: we're making a book at Parsons, we're exploring the herbarium stacks at the NYBG, we're foraging at Brower Park; text: "The Cross-Reference Coalition is an experimental school tracing exuberantly interdisciplinary links among New York City’s libraries, archives, and other knowledge institutions."

An unfortunate part of the over-personalization/AI-fication of tech is that we lost the randomness that comes from listening to whatever was on the radio. #Spotify does 'made for you' which is so boring: great! you mined songs I already know to suggest a playlist that leaves nothing to chance?
