after years of yearning, i bought myself a notebook with the legendary tomoe river paper. i'm so excited to use it. some reddit nerds say it's not as good as it used to be but i'm not bothered. i'm about to finish my rollbahn notebook.

it's astounding that the netherlands, of all places, developed a rich tradition of landscape painting. the place on god's earth most devoid of landscapes.

i've been getting into tower crane counterweights recently. there's a lot of construction around my neighborhood. interesting to see the different designs.
tower crane counter-jib with counterweights. the crane structure is red and the weights are concrete grey set on a pleasing diagonal.tower crane counter-jib with some concrete counterweights. these counterweights are concrete blocks with beveled bottom edges, not on a diagonal. there is an american flag hanging from the end of the counter-jib, and also another flag with a P on it that i can't identify.morrow brand tower crane counter-jib with some yellow slab counterweights. they are not as pleasantly aligned.yellow tower crane counter-jib with counterweights. again this is morrow brand (the crane is manufactured by Liebherr but the rental company is morrow) and again the counterweights look pretty slapdash

the inexpressible heartbreak, the impossible labor of art: i am full of metal and cancer and these are my songs, my terrible children, this is my work, i bring it to you cupped in broken hands. genius dot com annotation: "cancer is a type of disease. it is being used here as a metaphor"

it's remarkable how explaining poetry, especially in the modality of genius dot com, makes it suck nuts super hard
screenshot of genius dot com page for the song Heavy Metal by Cameron Winter. On the left is the lyrics to the song, highlighted:

Oh, cancеr of the fingers
And the hands of a beginner
Songs are meant for bad singers

On the right is an explanation (this is truncated)
Biologically, cancer is an uncontrollable and deadly reproduction of a creature’s cells that eventually spreads throughout the body and kills the victim. Here, we see cancer being used as a metaphor for art,

the newest Geese album has a Magnetic Fields type sweet romantic innocence to it, not what i expected. i'm a sucker for that stuff. I've got half a mind To just pay for the lobotomy And tell em get rid of the bad times And get rid of the good times too I've got no more thinking to do

my other high-confidence observation is that i'm usually wrong about stuff, so by saying "ai isn't a bubble" i'm goading the universe to prove me wrong

Vinny @vcolavin.com · 03/12/2025
based on the long-running observation that, these days, the dumbest and worst outcomes are the most likely, i hereby register my prediction that AI is somehow _not_ a bubble and in fact will continue to grow and make everything worse forever

i can't imagine a single system that would be totally resilient degradation and corruption by bad actors over decades or centuries. even a perfectly egalitarian democracy would be vulnerable to a stupid and cruel populace maybe authoritarian is here because a lot of people wanted authoritarianism

i'm just casually wondering if there's a sickness in our hearts that we ignored as it festered and metastasized. if we spent decades or centuries as convenient bedfellows of pointless cruelty and violence and the darkness grew in from the corners of our eyes until it covered them

I believe what many people actually want in their heart of hearts is for the "right" thing to happen without requiring anybody to wield power. But it turns out there is no magic. It's just us.

releasing your movie on netflix is a good way to make sure it withers into obscurity and irrelevance. i didn't even know they released a chicken run sequel in 2023 until i specifically went to check if such a thing existed
