I have always wanted a reporter to do a story on how football coaches deal with constant sore throats: constant tea and ricolas? Exercises to build vocal muscles? Focus on proper vocal techniques? If you're screaming as much as a coach does you risk nodes? We need the story

Also, dont think I've seen enough (any?) music studies people describe this as a bailout (positive) for the met, but it is and thats a good thing. Governments should protect and support cherished public arts institutes (even ones with problems like the met)

Think its more the shift from public funding to creative destruction, gotta show investors you're doing something and get them excited of the possibility of future progress that is (im a finnancialized sense) profitable not show the public you did something effective

The funny thing is, around 2015-18 buzzfeed actual long-form investigative reporting was very good (probably better than NYT) but the listicles craze as a viable form of media forced them to shut down. Listicles coming back as traditional journalism means another point for Hegel lol

Yes! And I think thats the nuance I was getting at that dodnt come through to everyone die to the limits of 200 characters! What is the historical precedent and embodied phenomenology of doing it "for the cool kids" or god, as it relates to church musicking, or for whatever!

Taken together, much of his writings can be understood as a history of how the philosophical construction of the western subject/cogito construct the anxieties of freedom they claimed to overcome. While its certainly western centric, he's writing in a period of global western dominance

While you can make that argument, I think several points complicate such a universalizing claim. Sartres philosophies had notable impacts on both siad and Fanon (who he was quite close to) and was writing in response to a rapidly globalization and post colonial world

In this sense, bad faith emerges specifically because the subject wants to be perceived in a specific way by the other even if that desire contradicts the individuals desires for themselves. Sartres individualism is made in direct rejection to a liberal notion of individualism
110
Jimi Eat Hendrix @vcmusictheory.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
This is a common critique leveled of sartre but one that doesn't hold weight. To sartre, bad emerges from the anxiety of knowing you are judged by the other, knowing that they will project their image of you into you regardless of the individual inferiority and openness you have

Jimi Eat Hendrix @vcmusictheory.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I think wanting to fit in or be social can be bad faith too, e.g. a polite kid who breaks a classroom rule to seem cool in front of their friends

Jimi Eat Hendrix @vcmusictheory.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
At a scholarly level, music scholars are resistant to assume we music for reasons outside of desire (be it an enjoyment of the music or to be part of a social group). I think the idea that those two are synonymous is an incorrect assumption an bad faith allows to explore that gap.

Within the spirit of an ethics of ambiguity, i do think many people would say doing something for a social reason announces a tension between the social and the individual that does beg questions about desires and agency that imply some amount of doing something you dont want to

In both instances I made qualifications: Going to the funeral *out of a perceived decorum* To what extent, *if any,* is going in bad faith I think you can frame going to either a funeral or concert against ones will as either good or bad faith. Im more interested in instances of the latter

Because it perfumes an a priority definition of what a woman is/does (see the second sex). I think there's a fair amount of depth in sartre thought that you are glossing over. Normally this wouldnt be an issue, but im using bad faith specificly in dialogue with sartres definition of the term
100
Jimi Eat Hendrix @vcmusictheory.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
If a person wants to go to the funeral to support someone else, sartre would not claim they are in bad faith because they want to go In the dishes example, most people want clean dishes, and thus the refusal to do the dishes is bad faith. Similarly the belief the woman must do dishes is bad faith
100
Jimi Eat Hendrix @vcmusictheory.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Not sure how familiar you are with ssrtre, but going to a funeral out of a perceived decorum is bad faith because you have accepted a social norm as an a priori truth and thus denied yourself of the ontological/material freedom of simply not going (a choice the person wants to make)

(a whole host of problems with Sartre's situation, but the students will have read de Beavior before this so they'll have better examples lol

Jimi Eat Hendrix @vcmusictheory.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
and yet, obviously it is not. Sartre, famously, gives the example of a woman whose date makes unwelcome advances, but puts up with it (which he controversially and probably sexistly) describes as bad faith since she only does so to please him...this is similar but not the same

Jimi Eat Hendrix @vcmusictheory.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Exactly! I'm looking for a reading for the course I'm teaching on existentialism and music and the situation you describe begs the q: to what extent, if any, is going acting in bad faith because it does feel so foreign to say "I went to a musical thing, didn't like the music, had a good time"
110
Jimi Eat Hendrix @vcmusictheory.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
ya and its certainly not bad faith to say you had a good time going to the movie, but if your kid asks you did you like the movie, you probably don't want to say no
010
Jimi Eat Hendrix @vcmusictheory.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Which means there is an ability to separate out "liking the music" versus "liking the music as part of an activity." This for a course I'm teaching on existentialism and music and am looking for a reading that will challenge students to ask if bad faith musicking can or cannot exist

certainly, my wife has a good time when i drag her to jazz concerts for date nights because they are quality time together, but if you ask her (as I have many times) she ranges from moderately liking to being bored at the concerts and would not say she likes jazz

not the point, but this tweet used "aesthetic object" to conform to Small's notion that music is an act, because in this instance, I think it is better to separate the culture from the object, but that's wrong and it's one point small is full of shit on, musical ontologies, even if flawed, exist
020
Jimi Eat Hendrix @vcmusictheory.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I think we (falsely) assume that people music because they enjoy the aesthetic object, but for a number of a reasons (religious, socio-cultural, lack of anything better to do) this is very much not the case. I'm sure someone has to have written about this!

Jimi Eat Hendrix @vcmusictheory.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Is there any ethnomusicological/cultural studies (really any field, but these seem like the two mostly likely) writings about people participating in musical cultures that they don't enjoy? Like a person who attends raves just because of the community?

Interestingly, in Saint Louis, the term refers to workers who came down from Indiana to find work as scabs when union members would go on strike. It was a fightin word a long time ago in Saint Louis

Steve waxman just accepted a position studying exactly this at the university of huddlesfield and should have some work on this coming out soon. I believe its called the amplification project. His book the the invention of the arena show should also have something along these lines

He's also done a faor amount of hip hop crossovers (none of which are particularly good imo) and dated Khloe which probably raised his star profile It also doesn't hurt that he seems to be a decent dude and is in a band with two really charismatic front men who both talk him up

In pop-punk circles he is probably the most famous drummer and generally pretty respected. I think there are certainly better pop punk drummers than him but he's a) the best musician in b) a genre defining band that c)has a unique musical voice
