We put two toddler bikes and a dollhouse on the curb on Saturday, to find new homes. They were still there this afternoon, so I checked on them, and the kids had repriced them (shortly after we put them out!) in hopes of quarters for the claw machine at our local diner. #parenting

I haven't been editing, or poking my website redesign, because I don't have the mental focus I need to concentrate. That's a good time to pick up a new hobby, right? 🤔😅 Currently studying for a ham radio license. (And so is 7yo, by her own choice, for some added family fun.)

Mother's Day, to me, is about breaking cycles. I cried over this. I'd have never written these answers when I was a kid, and I'm so grateful for every reminder that my kids know they are loved. It's the part about me being kind that really got me somehow, though. My mother called me selfish.

From #MordenaDawn book 3, Jake being a moody preteen again. To be fair, he'd wanted things to stay the same, just the two of them, when he asked his father to save the planet. Instead his father's too busy helping a whole group of new people settle a new planet, and Jake feels forgotten. #WIPSnips

Scowling, Jake crossed his arms and leaned against the public balcony outside his private room, staring at the distant mountain range. One of Janikk’s many forests stretched beneath him, carved in two by the monstrously large and currently unnamed river which Urla’s city planners had chosen as water source for the newly fledged city behind and beneath him. A sense of belonging thrummed along his soul, the network of life on Janikk recognizing and welcoming him as one of its own.

It would have been beautiful, if he’d actually wanted to be here in the first place. But this was his life now, ever since he’d foolishly demanded his father save Baden instead of fleeing to a new planet like the necromancer had wanted. Beauty, and loneliness.

Shane ends up adopted by a large brood lizard. He likes to go to the orchards to munch and think when overwhelmed, and she quickly learned he was an easy source of fruit cores to eat. He's named her Yazal, which means "one who does exactly what is necessary, and nothing more." #SFFChat

It would feel like home on Janikk. Urla would study the animals, Jeb would accompany her and keep busy with the plants, and Razick would set up camp and guard the perimeter and ensure that Shane was never left alone because fearsome necromancer or not, officers suck at away missions. #SFFChat

They emerged from the Afterlife along the northeast section of the island, atop a large glacier overlooking the eastern ice shelf. Red and orange from the dawning spring sun glinted in the dancing waves of the ocean below, casting their light in shimmers against the ice beneath the last faint slivers of Janikk’s twin moons. Pristine snow, devoid of even a hint of animal tracks, covered every surface as far as Shane could see.

Not that tracks would remain visible for long.

He shivered in the frigid wind whipping across the glacier, before cursing and fumbling for the environmental controls of the uniform, half-frozen fingers pawing uselessly at his pocket. He’d forgotten to turn it off, the built-in Anemancy dutifully siphoning off his body heat to the environment.

“Can’t take you anywhere.” Razick shook her head, removing her glove to extend two bare fingers in his direction. “Let me through your Shielding.”

The haunted planet TR-75, who insists on being called Janikk, is home to a large assortment of lethal and well-defended creatures. In "Spirits of the Relentless" Shane and his allies travel there to request sanctuary. She's devoured all prior landing attempts, but maybe they'll get lucky? #SFFChat

“So the creatures in his stories do mostly match the official report,” Jeb concluded. “And they’re coordinated. There’s definitely an intelligence at work.”

“Janikk?” Jake’s eyes shone as he spoke. “Why did he say that’s the planet’s name?”

“Said he heard the wind speak.” Jeb shrugged. “Wasn’t any language he recognized, but it kept using the same word in every sentence: Janikk. He assumed it was meant as a name.”

“So… Either we’re traveling to a sentient planet who can coordinate with the wildlife,” Shane summarized, “or we’re chasing the frantic musings of a madman about a death planet.”

I've invented many species. The reptilian fox like creatures here are called fylox, predatory pack hunters which refuse to be domesticated but can be convinced to adopt others into their pack, given the right incentive. Like Haveid here, who provided medical treatment. #SFFChat

Jeb shook his head, confused, as several members of the crowd rushed to notify the restaurant of their celebrity birthday celebration. “It’s not my… Raz. Tell him it’s not my birthday.”

“Free cake!” Razick grinned. “I knew you loved me!”

“Enjoy your hunt, sir.”

Haveid removed their own helmet and closed their eyes, nose tilted upward to take in the cool scents of the evening, unfamiliar and yet comforting all the same. They didn’t regret their agreement with Navarch Javon, watching her back and defending her position against more threats than she’d ever realize as she rose through the ranks, but their days as a battle mage in the field had always remained a fond memory. It felt good to be back planetside for a change.

The faint breeze wafting from the direction the commander had pointed carried none of the expected scents of an animal on the run. And no true predator would remain downwind of their prey for long.

Decision made, Haveid set off in the opposite direction. They slipped from their boots to silently traverse the ground in bare feet, the cool earth a welcome sensation beneath their footpads after months spent on the unyielding metal of the Relentless’ decks.

Time to run.

I really need to finish one of my projects before I start a new one! But, uh, this one *is* already started, have a snippet:

“There you are.”

Vida froze at the voice, squeezing her eyes closed and twisting her hands in the sheets as she started in on the breathing exercises the ship’s counselor had taught her.

Selkirk wasn’t here. It was all in her head, another hallucination summoned by her guilty conscience.

“Where’s your fire, little wolf?” The hallucination laughed, the nightmare of shattered glass and broken dreams constantly echoing through Vida’s every quiet moment. “Don’t tell me I broke you already. We were just getting started.”

“You’re not real,” Vida recited. “Not real. Not real. Not–”

“I see.”

The hallucination huffed, and suddenly Vida felt the familiar grip of Selkirk’s telekinetics wrap around her and haul her from her bunk.

Have I mentioned I hate labeling things? I never know quite how to categorize stuff. Especially my stuff. Or me. Life is messy, and trying to shove it into boxes feels limiting. That said, I know how helpful labels are, so I try. And I actually had fun with the forum tags. (Maybe too much fun).

Veris wiped his face against his sleeve as he pulled off the thick rubber gloves Jake’s father had given him. “Done! Finally! Now, about those magic lessons…”

“You’re not done,” the necromancer answered softly, his back still to Veris as he scrubbed at a particularly stubborn stain on the large bathroom mirror.

“You didn’t even look,” Veris protested. “I cleaned them exactly the way you showed me.”

“If you had, you’d be done,” Shane answered, his eyes meeting Veris’ reflection in the mirror. “But you’re not. Clean them again, correctly this time. No shortcuts.”

Then there's Veris, who's more interested in managing the logistic needs of an entire planet than any sort of romantic or physical relationship. He's got plenty of friends, though. It's hard not to love Veris, he's genuine and approachable and loves being helpful, even despite the power he wields.

Veris has lovely purple eyes and blue scale-like skin with silver-blue hair. He's also got fins for ears, and a giant friendly grin.
