Why do we care about surplus so much? Instead of business revenue becoming profit that goes to CEOs or shareholders, revenues from VAWC co-ops become surplus going to workers, retained earnings that feed back into community businesses, and is invested in loans to other co-ops in our communities.

VAWC Co-ops keep surplus local, retaining jobs & infrastructure in our communities. This way profits don't leave our region. Since 2008, VAWC Co-ops have distributed $536K in surplus to their members, communities, and their own growth. Surplus is decided by co-op members, not external shareholders.

Collective Copies is addressing climate and sustainable infrastructure both locally and globally: They used 415,000 sheets of 30% recycled paper in 2024, which conserved 300 trees and lowered CO2 emissions by 52,305 lbs. They also had 1,000 kWh of renewable energy usage in production operations.
