New post on Maria Makes a Mess - A basement time bomb: mariamakesamess.com/blog/covid-m... I found my reusable COVID masks and am figuring out what to make with them. This blog is new and it's where I'm chronicling things I'm crafting. Static-coded website with Hugo, oldschool style bloggery.

This week I made myself the Pekka jacket by ReadytoSew.fr - perfect for the cool fall days, so cozy! Like wearing a duvet :) my first time making a lined garment also; glad I went with this pattern to learn how to do it. Definitely a nice and easy beginner sewist project, had a blast making this.

Not my favorite kind of email to get, but genuinely pleased that @frame.work reached out to customers so quickly. For non-business customers, this data was breached: Full name Email address Login IPs Billing and shipping address information Country Address City State Zip code Phone number Company
Dear Valued Framework Customer,

We are writing to inform you of a data breach at our business intelligence database provider Metabase that resulted in an attacker accessing customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, and addresses. Your information was in the database that was accessed in this breach. This breach did not include order or payment information.

We have full details on the incident below. We are deeply sorry for this breach of information, and are reviewing and improving our methodology for data storage in external database vendors.

We are also in the process of notifying the regulatory authorities in each region where relevant regulations exist. Note that while regulations in most regions do not require notification for breaches of names, email addresses, phone numbers, and addresses, we are sending this email to you regardless to ensure you have visibility and can take any actions needed.

What happened?

On August 6th, 2026 at 9am Pacific Time, Metabase notified us of a breach of their systems with the following email message:

On Monday, August 3, we discovered that Metabase Cloud was attacked by someone utilizing an unknown (“0-day”) security vulnerability in versions 1.58 and above. We immediately blocked the endpoints used for the attack, then quickly identified and patched the vulnerability. We notified law enforcement, and we have engaged with a third party forensics firm to conduct an independent investigation.

Your instance of Metabase was vulnerable to this 0-day. Therefore, to protect your company, we recommend you:

Rotate the credentials for every database connected to your instance; and

Review the admin accounts on your instance and remove anything you don't recognize.

We also discovered that the attacker was able to gain access to your instance. We created a report on the actions we believe the attacker took on your instance, which includes log files, and which you can get from the Metabase Store at [removed url].

I am never far away from some of my favorite desk rocks! Some of my favorites that I've collected over the decades.
My hand holding four very different rocks. One on the far left is very thin and dark and semi-rough, middle bottom is round and very granulated and rough, right most is very heavy and super smooth. Up top there's a bit of volcanic rock from a beach on Santorini.

My father Costas Varmazis died 10 years ago today. He was a brilliant engineer and physicist, a loving father, and had a sincere, generous soul that only comes from living through unimaginably hard times. He taught me to garden, to tinker, to strive for excellence, to see the best in people.
Me at around 10 years old in a white sweatshirt, hugging my father Costas in a red and grey plaid flannel. We are at Mack's Apples in Londonderry NH back in the early 1990s.

It was extraordinarily special to share just a taste of this eternal city with my loved ones. We got lucky that last week the weather was perfect every single day. I even got an opportunity to recreate a photo I took on the Pont des Arts back in 2006.

Spent a few hours today volunteering at my town’s fix-it clinic, held at our library. I lent my sewing skills to people who needed mending help. This extends the life of clothing and keeps them out of the trash. I really enjoy doing this. A better world is possible if we put in the time & show up.

Outstanding poem by Michael F. Dubois about where we are right now as Americans.
A WHOLE CIVILIZATION WILL DIE TONIGHT - by Michael F. Dubois @michaelfdubois

My son needs lunch, and I have to put his backpack together, but a whole civilization will die tonight, so I'm wondering if they've closed their schools.
Like, a snow day, maybe, except instead of snow it's
"keep your children home so if you die, you die together" — instead of "we'll open back up once the plows have cleared" it's
'we don't know if we'll be here tomorrow, hold your babies tight."
It's just "talk" I'm told, which I've been told before.
"It's how the president makes his deals." But I've never heard anyone talk about other human beings this way, and I'm not certain I can look my son in the eyes if we all agree to stomach it one more time.
A civilization will die tonight, but as I zip up his backpack and kiss him off to school I think: if this is what we call leadership then I'm not entirely sure ours isn't already dead.

This is so unhinged:
Monsieur de Jarjayes,

Word is spreading among certain circles about potential Royalist sympathizers infiltrating the Guard. Your reputation suggests you might already be aware, but I'm reaching out through discreet channels given the delicate nature of current political tensions.

A trusted contact from the Marseille regiment shared troubling intelligence suggesting several junior officers under your command have been making unauthorized communications with radical elements. These whispers hint at potential betrayal that could compromise the entire Royal Guard's integrity - something I'm certain would deeply concern someone of your particular standards.

I cannot elaborate further through standard correspondence. Discretion is paramount. The wrong ears could twist such sensitive information into dangerous speculation.

Regards,
Henri Beaumont
