#RecommendedReading If you like true crime, I can greatly recommend The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson. It uses novel-style writing to tell the REAL WORLD history of the 1890's Chicago World's Fair, AND the murderous H. H. Holmes, sometmes called America's First Serial Killer...

You can get The Devil in the White City at basically any bookstore. I recommend shopping local.

The United States of America is still classed as a "Flawed Democracy" according to the 2025 World Democracy Index. Notice that we are backsliding, but far, FAR from completely in the red or even a hybrid regime yet. We have work to do saving what's left. THIS is why you need to vote.

The USA on the World Democracy Index as of 2025 currently is classed as a "Flawed Democracy", meaning it is a democracy under severe stress that could tip into being a hybrid regime if we're not careful. It hasn't yet, thankfully, and likely won't judging by the way the Trump Regime is losing support rapidly - faster than it can take away all our rights, to be exact.

We have a lot of work to do to fix what's left of our democracy, but thankfully we started from a pretty strong position to start with, so as long as we ACTUALLY PAY ATTENTION AND VOTE we're gonna be just fine.

Anyone who says the USA is "no longer a democracy" therefore is doomposting, lying, or wants the USA to actually no longer be a democracy.

There's a game called Riven. It's a sequel to a game called Myst. In these games, you can literally create connections to other people and worlds through written books, in other words, knowledge is soft power.

Riven's antagonist is a vile colonialist who believes he's a god and can do this writing. He has wasted whole worlds of potential soft power in search of proof his hard power is the correct way to do things. If he connected with people and worked with them, he would have vastly more power over whole multiverses and ultimately, be almost akin to a god.

Instead, he wastes the resources of one world, called Riven, to try and rule 244 OTHER worlds through forcing them to do what HE wants. Because while this antagonist can be persuasive, he doesn't really understand the value of simply being able to write links to worlds at all. He doesn't understand his true power, soft power... and so he loses it all. His power, his command, his ability to keep oppressing people. Because he doesn't understand soft power.

I think about Riven a lot these days, and how relevant it is to us now in 2026.
