"Don't bite your toenails," chided Grubraella to Culka. "A Lady-in-Waiting would never do that. Also, sit up straight, and put your hands in your lap."

Raven's eyes narrowed. "I've noticed," she said, "that you've been helping Culka adjust to being a girl...."

Almost, she added silently, as if you've been a girl more than twenty-four hours....

Grubraella smiled. "She's young. She hasn't learned how to act like a lady."

Raven's ears pricked up. "And... you have?"

The caravan was protected by twenty royal guards, led by a Captain Gordo in bright steel armor.

Miss Culka sighed. "Isn't the Captain dashing?" she asked. "He's my ideal knight in shining armor. That's exactly who I wished to become!"

Raven frowned. "But you became a Lady-in-Waiting instead?"

"Of course!" the girl said. "I'm too poor to ever become a knight. But dressing like a princess is the next best thing!"

Raven, who quite enjoyed dressing like a princess, could not argue.

Early in the morning, the princess and her three Ladies-in-Waiting boarded a carriage for the long trip to Sundered Valley.

"How long will the trip to Sundered Valley take?" asked Raven.

"It is a two day trip," Princess Grungeo replied. "Be prepared for a long, boring ride."

"In that case," said Raven, "shall I tell you how I met Setsuna the fox goddess and gained two extra tails?"

Raven told her tale - but she added extra details, such as a wicked wizard and a daring rescue.

In the morning, Grubraella and Culka were revealed as goblin girls. Maids took their measurements, and within the hour they were both dressed in fancy gowns - as was Raven herself.

"So pretty!" Grubraella exclaimed, twirling about.

At breakfast, Princess Grungeo said, "We leave for Sundered Valley in three days."

Raven glanced up. "That quickly?"

"Indeed," replied the princess. "Mother does not want to give Prince Moldeater time to change his mind, or time for our enemies to act...."

That evening, Raven remained at the king's estate. She and the two boys dined with the princess, and she helped Princess Grungeo prepare for bed while the two boys watched.

"Is this what a Lady-in-Waiting does?" asked Culka.

"Among other things," Raven replied. "I am hardly an expert."

"It's like being someone's chum," said Grubraella, "only in a more girly and royal way."

"I think," said Raven, "that there is a bit more to it than that...."

Raven handed each of the goblin boys a silver bracelet with a demon-headed design.

"Looks like a Bracelet of Power," noted Grubraella.

The Bracelet of Power was one of the more famous items to be found in the Wyrmhaven Deep dungeon. They were rarely sold; those that owned them had found them in the dungeon.

"I assure you it's not," Raven said. "If it were, I would have never handed it to you...."

Not like I've been a girl my whole life? thought Raven. It was a strange statement for a boy to make, even accidentally.

"Your parents are fine with you becoming a girl?" she asked.

"Yes! It's a great honor to serve the princess!"

"Being a girl is different from being a boy, you know."

The boy made a face. "We'll have to wear dresses, and we can't like bugs."

"I think it's fine for you to like bugs..." Raven began.

"No!" the boy exclaimed. "I hate bugs! Especially wasps and centipedes!"

"Running the family estate," said Raven, "doesn't sound so bad."

"You say that," replied Grubraella, "but my family is poor. Our days of being a powerful noble family are long gone. Luckily, I got this chance to be Lady-in-Waiting to a future queen, so maybe that will enhance our family's standing."

"And that's why you want to become a girl?"

"Yes!" the boy replied. "It's not like I've been a girl... I mean WISHED to be a girl my whole life, or anything!"

This struck Raven as odd. "Do you really wish to become a girl?" she asked.

"Of course!" the boy replied. "I played Stabby-Rock-Sack with my brother for it. I won!"

Stabby-Rock-Sack, Raven had learned, was a goblin game similar to Rock-Paper-Scissors.

"You have a brother?"

"Yes, Gobrollo, my identical twin," said Grubraella. "Poor guy! He's stuck with inheriting the family estate!"

A week later, Raven met the two "Lady-in-Waiting" candidates - two young goblin boys named Grubraella Grimebones and Culka Dungbreath. Culka was no more than nine years old, while Grubraella might have been twelve or thirteen.

Raven frowned. "Correct me if I'm wrong," she said, "but isn't Grubraella a name for a goblin girl?"

"It is. My name was Grubrollo," said the boy, "until this past Monday, when my parents had it legally changed...."

One day, Raven Softpaw was summoned again to meet with the goblin king. The queen was also here, along with Princess Grungeo, who had once been Prince.

"In two weeks," said Princess Grungeo, "I shall travel to Sundered Valley to marry Prince Frikaz Moldeater. It's all been arranged. Isn't this news wonderful?"

Raven's eyes grew wide. "Already? But you've only been a princess for two months...."

"Right, and we don't want to let the Prince change his mind!"

"Ball of Wing Sauce!" Freydis yelled, launching a mass of orange sauce at the monster.

"Ball of Slime!" Fluffdusti added a swirling green ball.

"Charcoal Dust Storm!" Raven exclaimed. A charcoal dust swirled about, tossing slime, sauce and dust everywhere and coating the entire party.

Shrillikina rang a bell. "Maid service!"

Tara sighed. With a word and a wave of her hand, the party was clean again.

"I swear," she said, "I never saw a party more desperate for a dungeon maid...."

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

Prince Grungeo 1

Grungeo Gravelfoot was the third prince of Grymwald - the younger brother to First Prince Gnarlo and Second Prince Grimace. He was considered by many goblins to be the cutest of the three princes, with hair the color of seaweed.

Since he was younger and in a different grade, Raven had never met Grungeo before. But now the third prince sat before her, with a fat coin purse in hand.

"You want to buy one of my T-Gurl Bracelets?" Raven asked in confusion.

Raven's eyes went wide. "What are you doing?" she whispered fiercely.

"I'm introducing you," Freydis replied. The wolfkin boy arrived at their table, and Freydis said, "Clover, this is my friend Raven. Raven, meet Clover."

The wolfkin boy smiled and held out his hand. "Nice to meet you!"

"Um... likewise," Raven replied.

"Thing is," said Freydis, "Clover's mom was in the same adventure party as my mom and dad, and Aleks, and the dwarves Ahn and Karoln. Also Mr. Snivelous Grumblegore, the Archmage of the Slime Tower at my school.

"They were, like, a famous group back in the day. Halford Cook's Calamity. And Clover's mom and my mom died in the same disaster, and like, Dad started a bar, and the dwarves adopted Clover and started a bakery. Simple, see?"

"No," said Freydis. "That's because he's a dwarf."
