From instrumentation to orchestration (in a usage I’ve seen, hardly universal)

It has definitely migrated from UK usage to US, along with "wanker" etc.

Even apart from the hairy word choice, the rhetoric is not even trying. "the reality that ... probably", come on

Caught this on the radio -- the quirk that caught my ear was the phrase lengths of the chaconne, in which the last bar of the eight-bar ground is sometimes dropped, leading to seven-bar phrases (of sometimes eccentric instrumental material). www.youtube.com/watch?v=snGG...

Yes, I was unclear — it’s true both that the party is the only one moving, or capable of moving, in the right direction, and that it contains reactionary elements

Someone was just complaining about Democrats wrt the death penalty — and while it’s true that they’re better, it’s also intensely frustrating that the whole range of American opinion is represented within the party, so Ds do sometimes tack to the right

“The novel is a prose narrative of some length that has something wrong with it.” On the other hand I’m currently reading the winner of the Nebula Award for Best Novel about 40 years ago, and the writing is so clunky…

Many images these days are heightened noticeably by some kind of postprocessing, making surfaces oddly smooth and edges oddly sharp. I suspect it’s automatic, perhaps for compression, but it makes them more like AI

Walgreens decided that in order to continue on a medication I’ve been taking for a year, I need to get my blood pressure taken. I’ll do it, but combined with a trip I’m taking, I’ll miss a week. (Trivial, but an example.)

Probably they mean in the neutral philosophical sense, e.g. you have a height, an age, an accent

The desire for explanation has been with us a long time. People don’t generally cultivate “negative capability” toward art, being open to its possibilities without requiring that it be placed and accounted for. Coming from classical music, I learned to appreciate e.g. a Haydn quartet without words.

It does happen that we stumble into a pun while drafting or talking off the cuff — but if you have the time to reflect on that, you should pick a lane rather than leave the cringe in the text

I do think classical music has/affords unique artistic virtues, but it’s not uniquely virtuous! (Not arguing with you, but these other idiots)

Are there examples of this — not necessarily romance, but non-order-bound series? Outside avant-garde experiments like Robert Grenier’s “Sentences”

I'm saying that lots of books use filler of this kind, but (uncharitably) that genre books do it more.

So the line about remarks is Gertrude Stein's, to Hemingway. The target was a kind of line he enjoyed putting in his prose -- worldly observations, which add a kind of color or verisimilitude to narrative but don't convey the gossip, as you put it.

Many engaging posters on social media are genre writers, who excel at making remarks with emphatic attitude. [Posting this under my October name so nobody can trace it back to my responsible identity.]

I’m a snob who enjoys some genre stuff, and I keep coming back to the chilly saying “Remarks are not literature.” Gossip is a kind of talk where meaning accrues obscurely, i.e. more than remarks.
