Because I'm Depressed #651: "On College Essays, Pt. 5" #becauseimdepressed #comics bcdecomic.com/comics/651/
A ten-panel comic.

Panel one: Chel is standing in front of her professor’s desk. The professor sits with her arms crossed. She says, “You’re a smart student, Chel. Why are you using -A.I.- to write your essay? Am I not giving you enough time to complete it on your own?”

Panel two: Chel averts her gaze in embarrassment, hesitating to answer.

Panel three: Chel lowers her head and sheepishly says, “I didn’t feel like doing it. I procrastinated until the night before it was due… and then I generated an essay just so I’d have something to turn in.”

Panel four: The professor raises a hand and says, “Chel, you’re here to -learn- and -grow-. And that isn’t going to happen if you allow -an app- to do all of the thinking for you.”

Panel five: The professor continues, “I don’t just give out assignments to waste your time, you know. They’re to help you reinforce what you’ve learned in this class, and to allow me to see how much my class is helping you expand your knowledge and improve your thinking skills.”Panel six: Chel listens silently as the professor says, “And I can only see that growth if it’s expressed by -you-, in -your own words.-“

Panel seven: The professor asks, “Do you get what I’m saying?” Chel glumly answers, “Yeah… I do.”

Panel eight: The professor smiles and says, “I’m -flexible-. If writing essays isn’t your speed, we can try something a bit different. Let’s talk about it after class, okay?” Chel smiles in relief and says, “Okay. Thanks!”

Panel nine: The professor puts her hands together and grins warmly, adding, “And one last thing, Chel!”Panel ten: The professor’s smile turns to an angry frown and she warns, “Don’t try turning in a paper written by an A.I. a -third- time. -I’ll know.-“ Chel smiles uneasily and says, “Got it.”

Just this one time.”Panel six: Chel smirks confidently and continues, “But I’ll be -smart- about it this time. Before I submit it, I’ll give it a once-over to make sure it matches my writing style. She’ll -never- know I didn’t write this essay.”

Panel seven: The following day, Chel is once again standing in front of her professor’s desk. The professor, her arms crossed and an irate look on her face, says, “You didn’t write that essay.” Flustered, Chel raises her arms and responds, “I wrote -parts- of it!!”

Panel seven: Wren looks up at Chel and says, “Chel, the essay’s already -written!- We can have fun -now,- you can turn the assignment in -tomorrow,- and your professor will be none the wiser!”

Text: But the mud didn't stick. Silent Spring and the conversation it brought about turned public opinion against the indiscriminate use of pesticides.
President Kennedy instructed his Science Advisory Committee to investigate pesticide safety. The committee, and other scientific assessments that followed it, verified Carson's research.
Backed by solid science, in 1972 the Environmental Protection Agency — itself recently established in response to the grassroots environmentalism that Carson had helped inspire — banned the agricultural use of DDT in the U.S.

Image: A flit gun with a can of DDT sitting behind it. The label in the DDT can lists various pests it can kill.Text: Rachel Carson did not live to see these developments. After a long and private fight with breast cancer, she passed away in the spring of 1964.
Dorothy Freeman took Carson's ashes back to Maine and scattered them over the sea she had loved so much in life.

Quotation: “For all at last return to the sea — to Oceanus, the ocean river, like the ever-flowing stream of time, the beginning and the end.”

Image: Dorothy Freeman stands on a rocky shore, the waves crashing beneath her and a forest visible in the background. Freeman somberly raises an urn into the air, allowing Rachel Carson’s ashes to scatter into the sea.Text: In the years since her death Carson has been lauded as a hero, even receiving a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1980. But the industry-funded attacks against her never ceased.
Modern critics of Rachel Carson's legacy allege that the banning of DDT has allowed malaria-spreading mosquitoes to multiply unchecked, leading to millions of preventable deaths in developing countries...
...ignoring the fact that Carson never argued for a total DDT ban, that many nations do use DDT for disease control, and that the major decline in DDT use worldwide is largely due to mosquitoes evolving a resistance to the chemical — something Carson had warned about.

Image: A marble bust of Rachel Carson, adorned with a Presidential Medal of Freedom.Text: In truth, Silent Spring represents a scientific success story. Immense harm to humans and animals has been averted thanks to the actions inspired by Carson's book. Many species, including the bald eagle, have been rescued from the brink of extinction.
From the sea trilogy to Silent Spring, Rachel Carson's writings instilled a sense of scientific wonder in readers and nurtured a rapidly-growing environmental movement. We get to enjoy the fruits of her efforts to this day, in the birdsong heard every spring.

Text: Pesticides are poisons. But the damaging effects of these poisons are not limited to just the pests they target.
Silent Spring explained how pesticides accumulate in the bodies of animals. The concentration of these chemicals grows as creatures lower on a food chain are eaten by ones higher up, with apex predators receiving the highest dose of the toxins. This biomagnification poses a serious threat to entire ecosystems.

Image: A food chain featuring phytoplankton on the bottom, zooplankton, small fish, large fish, and finally fish-eating birds at the apex. A large arrow runs behind the food chain, narrowing in width and growing more intensely red as it rises from the bottom to the top.Text: Birds of prey at the top of food chains are especially harmed by DDT accumulation because the chemical makes the shells of their eggs very thin, causing them to break easily.
There are other hidden risks. Carson acknowledged the value of pesticides, but warned that their overuse would lead to insects evolving a resistance, diminishing their usefulness in protecting crops and controlling insect-borne diseases. Additionally, many pesticides were linked to cancer or other illnesses in humans.

Image: A bird’s nest lying in the grass. There are three eggs in it, all of which have cracked and partially-collapsed.Text: Environmental issues, Carson argued, needed to be a part of political discussion in America. She accused chemical manufacturers of spreading misinformation, and chastised public officials for uncritically accepting the industry's claims.
Carson was a master at making complex science accessible to a general audience. Her talent as a science communicator made Silent Spring an instant bestseller.
But the book also generated a vicious and well-funded corporate backlash.

Image: A stack of first edition copies of Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring”, with green cover and yellow highlights.Text: Representatives and lobbyists for the chemical industry tore into Silent Spring, calling the book unobjective, alarmist, and anti-scientific. Carson was accused of being a Soviet stooge. Her publisher was threatened with lawsuits.
Sexism pervaded the attacks. Carson's credentials as a scientist were minimized and she was portray as an irrational, hysterical spinster driven by her emotions rather than honest scientific inquiry.

Image: A dour man wearing glasses and a labcoat, and holding a copy of “Silent Spring” in one hand. The subtitle identifies him as “Dr. Robert White-Stevens, industry spokesman”. He says, “If man were to follow the teachings of Miss Carson, we would return to the Dark Ages.”

Text: Carson never married or had children, and spent much of her adult life caring for her aging mother, her two orphaned nieces, and eventually her orphaned grandnephew.
She had never shown any romantic interest in men. But she did share a close relationship with Dorothy Freeman, whom she met on Southport Island in Maine. For twelve years, the two women spent summers together in Maine and exchanged hundreds of adoring letters.

Image: Rachel Carson and Dorothy Freeman walk down a Maine beach together, smiling at each other affectionately. A coastal forest can be seen in the distance.Text: It was around that time that Carson began to grow concerned about the overuse of synthetic pesticides, particularly DDT.*
DDT was used by the U.S. military during World War II to control typhus-spreading lice. Applied directly to the skin, the “miracle chemical” killed insects while causing no apparent harm to soldiers.
After the war, DDT was sold commercially and saw widespread use in farming. 80 million pounds were sprayed over crops in 1959 alone.
* Dichlorodiphenlytrichloroethane.

Image: A truck drives alongside a cornfield. A man standing in the bed of the truck sprays DDT into the rows of corn.Text: Carson was not the first to question the safety of pesticides; scientists and laypeople alike had been sounding the alarm about their harmful effects for years.
When Carson decided to give the topic a book-length treatment, she was able to draw on a multitude of individual accounts of pesticide exposure and lawsuits filed over spraying campaigns. Fellow scientists assisted with their own research, and reviewed Carson's work to ensure scientific accuracy.

Image: Rachel Carson works away at her typewriter. She is being observed from the background by a scientist, a journalist, and various indistinct people.Text: In 1962, after four years of labor, Rachel Carson's book was released to the public. Its title was Silent Spring.

Quotation: “Over increasingly large areas of the United States, spring now comes unheralded by the return of the birds, and the early mornings are strangely silent where once they were filled with the beauty of bird song.”

New Comics Chronicle short: "Rachel Carson - The Sea and 'Silent Spring'" #comicschronicle #comics #history #science comicschronicle.com/comics/17/ [1/4]
Title: Rachel Carson - The Sea and Silent Spring

Text: Rachel Louise Carson was born in 1907 on a family farm near the factory town of Springdale, Pennsylvania. From her earliest years she was a lover of nature, and an avid writer — at age ten, she had her first story published in the children's magazine St. Nicholas.

Image: A young Rachel Carson sitting on a grassy hill at the foot of a tree, writing in a notebook. In the distance, a town with a smoke-billowing factory can be seen.Text: A star student, Carson studied English in college before changing her major to biology, and earned a master's degree in zoology. She intended to pursue a Ph.D., but dropped out of school amid the Great Depression to help support her family.

Image: Rachel Carson as a young woman, wearing a graduation cap and gown and holding a diploma while smiling.Text: Fascinated by the sea, Carson secured a position at the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries. Between research and administrative duties she wrote articles on marine life.
Soon she was writing books, and her bestselling nonfiction “sea trilogy” — Under the Sea Wind (1941), The Sea Around Us (1951), and The Edge of the Sea (1955) — won her popular acclaim and the financial security to quit her job and focus on writing.

Image: Rachel Carson sitting at her desk, typing away on a typewriter. Books and maps surround her.Text: Her writing style was vivid and poetic, intending to foster a “sense of wonder” in the natural world.

Quotation: “To stand at the edge of the sea, to sense the ebb and the flow of the tides, to feel the breath of a mist moving over a great salt marsh, to watch the flight of shore birds that have swept up and down the surf lines of the continents for untold thousands of years, to see the running of the old eels and the young shad to the sea, is to have knowledge of things that are as nearly eternal as any earthly life can be.”

Image: A view of the ocean. Green landmasses can be seen above the surface. Beneath the waves swim fish of various shapes and sizes, a few squid, and a sea turtle.

Indrani says, “This is me and my dog. His name is -Bruno-, and he’s -such- a good boy!”

Panel two: The phone is now displaying a photo of a refrigerator door, which is decorated with various magnets and photographs. In the center is a child’s drawing of the cartoon character Bluey. Indrani says, “And this is a drawing my granddaughter made for me. She’s only three years old! -So- talented!”

Panel three: The phone is now displaying a photo of a spacious backyard, with trees and shrubs in the distance and a bird bath in the foreground. Indrani excitedly points to a trio of deer grazing in the photo and says, “Oh, and look at this! There were -deer- in my backyard the other day! Isn’t that -wonderful?-“

Panel four: Diego is sitting in a hospital examination room, looking disinterested as Indrani leans in to show him her phone. Diego says, “I didn’t come all the way out here just to see your camera roll.” Indrani replies, “I figured it’d be less depressing than going over your test results.”

Because I'm Depressed #608: "On Silence, Pt. 4" #becauseimdepressed #comics bcdecomic.com/comics/608/
A three-panel comic:

Panel one: Ben stands next to the living room sofa smiling and says, “I see you’ve met -Wax Ben!-“ Chel, flustered, gestures at the wax duplicate of Ben sitting next to her on the sofa and incredulously asks, “Is -that- what that thing is!?”

Panel two: Ben grins and says, “Real lifelike, ain’t it? And it’s -entirely- wax, ‘cept for the hair and clothes! It cost me a -fortune-… but the chance to have a wax replica of myself was just -too cool- to pass up on!”

Panel three: Chel looks up at Ben, unimpressed, and asks, “You spent a fortune on a wax sculpture because you thought it’d be -cool?-“ Ben matter-of-factly replies, “Well, also so I could drive in the carpool lane.”
