Study photography. My go-to is to understand focus. Not just your aperture slider: understand where the eye is drawn to and work with that. This can happen accidentally, since a lot of photography is rooted in human instinct. What do we like looking at the most? Explanations in alt text.

Focus can be achieved with colour, shape and line of sight

The focus here is the couple's guns, and their expressions. You can draw a triangle from the barrel of their pistols to Higgins's blood-splattered face to Yuri's eyes and back. The lettering isn't overpowering but noticeable because it cuts past the focus points.

Here the focus is actually a straight line, going from the DS to Higgins. This is useful for dialogue shots to convey a connection. The background is somewhat blurred by the focus, and the colour blocking highlights Higgins but not Yuri, making sure the focus on her remains on the DS. The line of sight is strong here, forcing the viewer to look at Higgins first: even if they look at the DS first, the eye naturally draws to his reaction to it.

Here the importance of colour blocking extends to character design. We're naturally drawn to eyes, but the shape of the earcuff creates that triangle from her face which draws the focus over to the ear.

You can also see the importance of contrast here: if she were wearing the gold cuffs, it wouldn't stand out as much. The silver is a cool tone in a sea of warmth, so the eye latches onto that.

Here I used hierarchy to pull the focus to Estinien. I could've angled it higher so Yuri has more visual weight in the shot, but she's not the main subject. Even before you read the text it's already clear that Estinien is talking because he occupies more of the space.

That's not to say Yuri is unimportant. She's still getting some attention due to her background. The bright blank wall silhouettes her well that it pulls the attention from Estinien, so the eye's focus goes from stinky dragoon to stinky machinist smoothly. His eyeline also huides this: by having them look left, I'm also forcing the viewer to pull their attention to Yuri without ignoring him, by making the viewer trace his line of sight.
