Finally saw the Pagliacci opera live here in Amsterdam. The 'ridi pagliaccio!' moment is indeed intense. My spouse: "I thought, hey wait, this is the opening of Queen's 'Its a Hard Life'!"

Had to go to Den Haag for some BS bureaucratic stuff. But with all the embassies there we spent a long time wandering up and down streets identifying embassies only by the flag hanging outside. Nerds, I know.

A francophile dragged me to go see De Gaulle: Resistance. I couldn't help thinking that CDG was a great comic figure, too outlandish to be real. But he was. Also wondered what was fictional. Who was that one woman at the battle of Bir Hakeim? Turns out she was real. Susan Travers and she […]

If anyone is suddenly feeling an urge to learn Ancient Greek, I highly recommend John Taylor's 'Greek to GCSE' which will rapidly take you to reading Greek. Halfway through this slim volume, you are already reading Homer (the Cyclops episode)

Using GPS in the year 1565 There’s a wonderful web app (“Allmaps Here”) that shows your GPS location on old maps. I love it. www.verbeeld.be/2024/11/17/using-gp… #maps #allmapshere #cartography #georeferencing
A vintage map showing a detailed, hand-drawn layout of a historic city with tightly packed buildings, narrow streets, and several landmarks. There is a purple marker near the center of the map. A button at the bottom reads, "Show maps around current location."A city square with cobblestone paving and historic European architecture under a clear blue sky. In the center, a building with a stepped gable façade is surrounded by older structures. There's a person in a brown coat walking a small dog nearby.
