looking through old posts on an old account cuz of... it's a long story... anyway, i found this post from 2017 and it's striking in two ways: - it fails to contain that fifth glyph (as with this post) - it, alas, is 100% fitting for now oulipo.social/@ranjit/33989

Good day and thank you for this invitation to join your rowing club! I'm looking forward to many joyful days of boating with you. So, about your idiotic ban on outboard motors - do you not know how fast you could go with a motor?

A narrative videogame should first and foremost be a bad idea, a terrible idea, a Survival Research Laboratories machine always on the cusp of annihilating itself and scattering parts and perhaps fingers across the landscape. The long struggle to become competent has ended; we all lost. What else could be worth doing, after that?

after thinking about it a bit... yeah, any age, I reckon. like, depends on the context but if we were on a trip to Berlin I don't see why we wouldn't go look at the wet collection there. and like, probably not a human brain in there but it wouldn't be shocking if there was.

And a bit of -- that's me!! in this paragraph (I played Breeze, Pine's... let's say boyfriend)
Walker releases me and I head outside to the next exercise. The camp director is under the flagpole, addressing a group of men, the sun dancing on his bald spot. "You're all afraid of manliness," he says.
"You're afraid of your own testosterone. Today we fix that."
We're told to face off with a partner. Mine is Stefan, an affable Dane who came to the Larp with his wife.
Stefan's character is Pine, who fell in love with another lineman at his factory, and Stefan/Pine smiles at me now through the beginnings of a full Viking beard.
"Now! Threaten your partner's personal space," the director says, walking up and down the rows. He stops to watch us. "Get up close. A normal man would feel his testosterone rise up in such a situation.
Ok, now when you feel something in your chest, give your partner a little manly shove."
Pine pushes me playfully. I throw him to the dirt and keep pounding on his chest with both fists until a pair of rehabbers pull me off of him.j

love the way this story lightly skips over "The Story of Yanagawa's Canals", which is a long live action documentary about, yes, a canal system. And is incidentally, a beautiful film.

to take a paragraph more or less at random:
Minærva: Most of the games I play these days, players are champing at the bit to have bad things happen to them because it's fun. It's maybe a weird analogy, right? But if we're talking about a situation where someone is in a position of, like, “I am here to hurt this person who has come here consensually,” you know? There's already lots of, uh, social stuff around that. And it's the person who's there to be hurt who has the power. The person who's doing the hurting is the service provider. You can talk about that in all sorts of different contexts, but the thing is that you are giving people a gift, as Jay said, when you cause problems. The main thing is giving them a good sense of what problems will lead to gameplay. Which problems feel like a “no” and which are “no but”. The biggest thing that you need to work out for these games isn't, “How do I hurt people in a way that is going to be fun for them,” but more, “When do you end a scene?” When have you caused enough problems and you can move onwards? I would like groups to understand it's good to cut.

reminds me of this (www.gamedeveloper.com/audio/q-a-wh...)
R.I.: Luftrauser was just crazy jam game that we made in two days back in 2011. It was this simple Flash game that we really liked, so we decided to follow up on it. Luftrausers was mentioned [proposed] first when we were pulling out of a deep depression caused by Ridiculous Fishing being cloned, and Jan Willem prototyped the first build on an airplane out of 2013's Game Developers Conference. Luftrausers changes a lot about the original. Players can now build one of over a hundred different airplane combinations, there are missions to be completed to unlock the game and the enemy roster was upgraded significantly. We refused to look at the original game while creating the first few prototypes of Luftrausers. One of the most interesting stories from development is that, while the original jam game took us less than 48 hours to create, the sequel took weeks to get up to that same level of quality we remembered from the original. It wasn't until we recreated the feeling we remembered from the Flash game in Luftrausers that we allowed ourselves to play the original. When we opened the original Luftrausers we were baffled. The original game was so boring and flat compared to the new prototype we had. We'd been building Luftrausers to equal our memories of a game built to make you feel good. In the new game, we had made the game to feel as good as we remembered the original game to feel, and the nostalgia goggles definitely were part of that.

I like this paragraph (from youngvulgarian.substack.com/p/in-which-i...)
If you're sitting on the trapeze and looking straight ahead then you turn slightly to the side so your left thigh remains firmly on the bar but your right one starts going out in the air slightly and you can feel the rope mirroring your spine on the right side then that means that you can and indeed should take your right arm and thread it above your head then behind the rope, which will make you feel more comfortable, and once you've done that you know that you can start sliding your hips down the bar towards the rope on the left-hand side, making sure to keep your right hand on the right-hand rope as you do so, and once you've slid enough you just know that you'll be able to bring your right knee towards your face, gently or quickly if you're used to doing it, and as long as you make sure that your left leg remains straight, you'll be able to let go of the rope entirely and let the upper half of your body fall down behind the rope, because the combination of your bent right leg and your straight left leg on the other side of the rope will allow you to be upside down without falling over. If you followed every instruction in the right order then you will be safe and nothing bad will happen to you.

"But there we were, doing the thing that is art and what we were making was games. We were doing it, but got confused when we tried to talk about it. Probably best talk less do more."
In that post I contrasted my more conventionally "game design" games with the ones that felt more like pieces of art. Back then there was a lot of talk about the relationship of games and art. A lot of us found ourselves called to be artists, in the medium of games, but we lacked a clear model of how to do that. Many of the games that had inspired us were made as products, by large teams, and trying to follow those was unhelpful. A couple of overthought and underfelt sketches by famous game-industry men were being paraded as though they were something important. Someone who mostly wrote about movies claimed that games could never be art (feeling insecure in their own medium's tenuous recognition as 'proper' art?). But there we were, doing the thing that is art and what we were making was games. We were doing it, but got confused when we tried to talk about it. Probably best talk less do more.

It seems to me that the solution isn't to admonish men at large; to go into every interaction with bad faith and your guard up, savagely waiting to be amused like Queen Victoria with a BLOK membership; to make everything about yourself. All those roads lead to narcissism masquerading as gender politics. The only solution is to opt out of the framework as much as possible. To stop running your image or your needs through the prism of how
"men and women" should be, and instead do whatever you want and take people however they come. Go out into the wilderness chin up, heart open, and willing to be pleasantly surprised. Men too. Isn't that the whole point?

We're here, very briefly, to eat three meals a day and fuck in the dirt and sit in one of those white plastic chairs drinking tea and trading stories formed from half-baked gossip you gathered throughout the day. The rest is a load of whatever. Don't be afraid to be a real person in a the real world, flawed and incoherent as both of those things are, and desirability will follow.
