I’d like to go into some more detail about the recent Malfoy genderbend trend (Malfoid) Essentially, the series of events follows like this: 🧵

- Artist draws genderbent Maltoy
- Others hop on the trend
- People note JKR's transphobia & funding of anti-trans measures
- Genderbent Malfoy becomes a rallying cry for many chuds, a point of severe disdain for many trans people, all the while there are a lot of artists still participating in the trend without trying to step into the culture war element
There are many arguments made that it is entirely impossible to avoid the political connotations around Harry Potter fanart given JKR's bigotry. In fact, the question I find most interesting is whether "Malfoid" is or isn't harmful - and more importantly, why.
The core argument against "Malfoid" is that genderbent Malfoy promotes an existing IP created by an active bigot, which therefore puts money into JK Rowling's pocket for anti-trans initiatives. I think this argument requires a greater breakdown.

Harry Potter was, and is, a major cultural phenomenon. It cannot necessarily "be promoted," it is already part of the cultural lexicon, with individuals having their own personal relationship with the work already.
What can be promoted is its products, which do financially benefit JK Rowling. The upcoming TV series can be promoted. Sales of Hogwarts Legacy can increase. Or people can run out and buy more merchandise.
Currently, we lack data confirming whether the art trend has significantly boosted sales to the series. Although I suspect the trend hasn't done much to JKR's pocket compared to more active WB initiatives.
There are two points of data we have on Malfoid increasing promotion of Harry Potter products. One, a viral and unconfirmed Twitter claim from Oct. 3rd that "the Harry Potter Store in NYC is straight up out of female Slytherin robes today." The other, Harry Potter games on Steam. The site SteamDB reports that Hogwarts Legacy has seen an increase in players on Steam, with

seen an increase in players on Steam, with the first spike on Oct. 2nd and gradual increases since. However, the game's 24-hour-concurrent-players peak is 14,288 users at time of writing, which is lower than the game's August peak (15,688). The game had far more players in January (34,948 peak). It is worth noting Hogwarts Legacy is currently on sale on Steam for $5.99.
Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions is also on sale and has also seen a spike, but very small in amount. The game jumped from peaks of 23 and 26 to a gradual rise of 63 concurrent players at its height in the past 24 hours.
This suggests to me that, while there is some monetary gain from the Malfoid trend, it is likely of minimal impact compared to an actual promotional partnership with a major company, or an official Harry Potter series release. The trend is too niche and too confined to Twitter, Malfoid has likely made substantially less money for WB (and thus

substantially less money for WB (and thus
JKR) than, say, last year's Harry Potter Fortnite cosmetics run.
As for the cultural impact of "Malfoid." It is true that genderbent Malfoy has become a rallying cry for some right-wing fandom culture warriors on Twitter, although this group is (a) simply not reflective of the political beliefs of many artists chasing the trend, nor (b) people enjoying Malfoid. The situation around female Malfoy is more equivalent to Hogwarts Legacy - some right-wingers obsessing over the game as a symbol, but a lot of people simply engaging because they like Harry Potter. The only difference is WB (and thus JKR) are less likely to benefit directly compared to Hogwarts Legacy. The chuds around it may be kicking up a storm, but they are unorganized, notoriously fickle, and prone to chasing trends placed in front of them.
Malfoid largely emerged because the Twitter algorithm works to boost hypernew content, and as Malfoid wears off in popularity,
