Ventana en el museo San Telmo, Donostia, España.
A tall window at the center of the picture, rounded top, rectangular bottom. We can see the blue sky outside, and a small cloud. The rest inside the room is dar.

There are waves in the sky. If there's a contrast in density, whether sharp (as at the interface between a body of water and the air above it), or gradual (as in the atmosphere itself, with denser air at bottom, lighter air above), chances are we can see gravity (not gravitational!) waves there.🧪⚛️

And here's the view towards the Southwest, our own galaxy, the Milky Way. The interstellar dust is clearly visible but it blocks most of the view towards the galactic center, which is is just below the mountain skyline. 2/3
A pic showing a dark mountain skyline, with the Milky Way going diagonally from top left to bottom right. It appears as a bright band with irregular dark areas inside.

A dark sky place deep in the Spanish #Pyrenees. From here you can see the south face of the Vignemale, a 3298 m peak, illuminated by a setting moon. Near the center of the image is the Andromeda Galaxy, much farther than any other star in the pic. Towards the left is Perseus' double cluster. 🔭 🧪 1/3
A rocky mountain at night with a starry night sky as a background.
This is a 30" exposure at f2.8, ISO3200, with a 2.8 mm lens.

A bit late but this is what the eclipse looked like from Belgium. In about two weeks (28th of August), the lunar nodes are still aligned with the sun and we will have a moon eclipse! 🧪 🔭
Pic of three stages of the eclipse, at the right when the moon was entering, middle close to the max occultation (as seen from Belgium), and the right when the moon was leaving. You can see a few sunspots on the solar disc.

uh-oh, this is in my garden.
An asian hornet wasp nest, hanging about 18 m up from a pine tree branch, photographed from below. It is round-ish, light beige color, with some wasps walking around.

A gas giant planet like #Jupiter can 'pulsate' at many different frequencies. We call them 'eigenmodes'. This is how one such #eigenmode might look like. They can be excited by the tidal pull of Jupiter's moons as they orbit the #planet. I will present this work at #EPSC2026 🧪 🔭
a panel showing the amplitude of a pulsation in a gas giant planet in three different directions (radial, north-south, and azimuthal). Blue is no motion, red is max motion. The pattern of the pulsation motion is symmetrical across the equator, and it's a bit checkered-like, with some voids too, forming what I think are beautiful patterns.

I received today my Klein bottle, made by the legendary Cliff Stoll. So happy! #Mathematics 🧪
A glass bottle on a table. But it's a special bottle because it ihas no inside or outside, it's one sided! its neck extends up and to a side and then goes back into the bottle joining its base.

Cirrus clouds above me
Cirrus clouds directly above me. They are wispy white clouds against a blue sky. They are common these days of hot weather in Belgium.

One of the largest #sunspot groups of the current #solar cycle, AR4478, here as imaged today from Hoogstraten, #Belgium. It sits pretty much at the center of the solar disc at this moment. And it's really big, about 16 Earth diameters from side to side! 🧪 🔭 #astrophotography
Telescope image of a region of the solar disc, near the center. It shows two large sunspots, dark in their center and their edges have a spaghetti-like structure. The rest of the image show the solar surface completely covered with much smaller "granules" caused by vigorous convection at the surface. The granules are typically a few thousand km across.

Two types of #clouds, dark ones in the foreground and bright ones in the background. The bright ones are #noctilucent clouds, near 80km high. This is around midnight from #Belgium. Clouds are illuminated by the Sun, not too far from the horizon this time of the year. 🧪 🔭

The heavy #thunderstorm hitting the #Netherlands today's evening, as seen from 100 km south. Here in Belgium we have a severe thunderstorm warning, we expect also heavy rain soon.
Towering storm clouds as the sun sets. You can see clearly the clouds' shadow outline projected onto other, more dispersed, clouds.

Walking around the #mountains I came across the rock that inspired #Magritte 's "Le Château des Pyrénées" #art
Picture of a large boulder, seemingly in mid air over a grassy field in the mountains. There's a person standing on the grass. There are clouds behind the boulder.
In reality this is a picture of a rock on a lake, but upside down.

This is what a heavy #thunderstorm loos like from a distance. We seldom get to see the strong #convective motion. In a very unstable #atmosphere warm and very humid air near the surface rise up. This passed just a couple of kilometers from my house today. 🧪 ⚛️

The pattern in the clouds is called a "Von Kármán vortex street". Their size is roughly 100 km. Very interestingly, the same pattern can be recreated at a much much smaller scale. Here they are, just a few centimeters across, visualized using a rheoscopic fluid: [2/2]

The Sea of Vapors (Mare Vaporum) on the moon. Lots of rilles (channels), and mountains. 🔭 🧪 #astrophotography
Pic of the moon around Mare Vaporum. Towards the top left corner is the Apennines montes range, and towards the top left is Mare Serenitatis. In the Mare Vaporum plain itself there are a few rilles visible, particularly the Hyginus rille, near the center of the pic along with crater Manilius.

A “reverse” contrail, i.e. the clouds clear briefly along the plane’s path (not from a plane going backwards lol). I don’t see this often. 🧪
A plane flies through a thin layer of clouds, leaving a momentary clear air trace behind.

That the sun is a star like the ones we see at night is something that will never stop being astonishing to me. Its surface has a texture, the solar granules, which are the result of very strong convective motion. The sunspots are magnetic anomalies, a bit cooler than their surroundings. 🧪 🔭
Partial image of the solar disc using a telescope and an infrared filter (IR 850 nm pass filter). The sun appears yellow and with a sort of texture (the solar granules). There are also some sunspots. In the center of the pic is the sunspot group denominated AR 4225.

Sometimes, when the end justify the means, the thing becomes a caricature of itself. Here in #mountaineering, but many analogies in #academia with their the indiscriminate use of LLM's and the #PublishorPerish culture. Re: www.bbc.com/news/article...

One of These Sunspots (Is Not Like the Others)
Picture of the setting sun just above some distant trees. There's a bit of haze, thick enough to show the sun as a sharp round disc. You can see even three sunspots, and the silhouette of a distant plane passing coincidentally in front of the solar disc.
