RP with your home river.
The Lea, full of bright green algae, as it passes through a concrete underpass by the Bow Roundabout. The underpass is lit with pink-ish municipal lighting on the right and whiter light across the surface of the algae. The river curves to the left and you can see natural light at the end of the tunnel.

Accidentally getting a second dog has been the most joyous thing if you don’t mind a little property damage. The hounds have just done their big morning wrestle and all’s right with the world.
Two black and white dogs playing on a dry patch of grass. One has his mouth wide open, caught mid-bitey face. A Christmas tree-shaped dog toy watches on in the background.

i offer you Edward Gorey with cats
The author Edward Gorey reclining face up on a sofa with feet up on a coffee table. Eyes closed, trouserless. Three at least somewhat striped cats surround him, one of them on his chest.

This morning’s passive aggressive text to the children: I should not have to have a house rule that the person responsible for cleaning bolognese out of the gramophone horn is the person responsible for putting it in there. And yet…
Close up of the interior of an enamelled gramophone horn with a modern speaker in it. Along with a surprising (non-zero) amount of pasta and sauce.

Yesterday my mother-in-law was buried. I loved her and will miss her and it was complicated. Today is full of sorrow for her and for my late partner and her living, grieving sister and grandkids, and for lost places (a greenhouse, a home). But wild and ancient things endure. Safe home, Audrey.

Today was beautiful. There is so much joy in being in community, even if that community is really frightened right now.
The statue of Churchill in Parliament Square, seen from behind, with protestors’ legs visible on the other side of the statue and a progress pride flag fluttering from his stick against a blue sky with a dusting of cloud.

It is the first night in a while that fireworks have not led to a monastic retreat into the cone of silence for poor old Sporks. Most of the last fortnight looked like this.
The nose and eyes of a sad-looking black and white dog sticking out from under a blanket.

I took up running on 23 January after my local pool closed. Today I did an 11km run to get me over the 500km line this side of the end of the year. If you’d told me a year ago that this would be a thing I do, I’d have laughed. I’m still not sure I like it, but it’s good for me.
Strava screenshot of the year to date showing, among other things, 500km run.

Mine: Saviour’s Day covered by Laura Marling. Would 100% choose this over perky, earnest Cliff.

The extraordinary Roger instagram.com/_superroger_... has done the outlines of the most extraordinary piece on my back. I am in love with it and very happy. Also messy high on the endorphins.
Outlines of a full back tattoo of a stylised ray (sea, not sun) by artist superroger, with blue remnants of the stencil where the black bits will be. An old tattoo, a lizard, is partially blasted over.

It’s seven years since some friends and I gathered for an impromptu wake for Leonard Cohen and created a bunch of his lyrics in plasticine.
A melamine plate covered in tiny little plasticine interpretations of Leonard Cohen’s lyrics. They include a bird on a wire, a blue raincoat and tea and oranges.

I made a card for some friends. Last year, I read Dance Me to the End of Love at their wedding, and we left out the verse about children because the odds of that were so small for them. And now their children are here and it makes me teary every time I think about how wanted they are.
A drawing on black card of a tent with four figures (two big, two small) inside it. The people, and the moon above them, are in gold. The tent outlines are in silver and are a Leonard Cohen verse:
Dance me to the children
who are asking to be born
Dance me through the curtains
that our kisses have outworn
Raise a tent of shelter now,
though every thread is torn
Dance me to the end of love

This huge, glorious fox has taken to taunting Princess Spichael by running up and down next door’s garden in a game of what appears to be no contact tag. Poor Sporks is driven wild by it.

This one, alarmingly regularly.
A still of a lawyer in the Simpson asking Sideshow Bob the question: “What about that tattoo on your chest? Doesn’t it say ‘Die, Bart, die’?”
Sideshow Bob replies: “No. That’s German for ‘The Bart, the’.”

New gender rules just dropped.
A sign next to railway tracks saying “Vietato attraversare i binari”, which is translated out of shot as “Do not cross the railway lines”, rather ruining the joke.

@catsofyore.bsky.social this is in a public exhibition in Golfo Aranci, Sardinia, of the photos of Marianne Sin-Pfältzer, who lived there in the 50s. I can’t find the original Online, so sorry for the photo of a photo.

The pandemic and associated dog acquisition were both terrible things (I love Spike, but he’s a troubled little dickhead), but they have revolutionised my relationship with the landscape I live in. It felt good to run along the Lea earlier and realise that it’s nearly cormorant air-drying season.

Here’s Spike. He’s not happy about the arrival of the cold weather and is following the sun around, grumbling.
