I looked up the review in Amon Hen 35 (p. 12). According to that, the "Publishers said that the copyright did not stretch to stage productions and that all they could do was a reading" so yours still counts as the first stage production!
.... Congratulations to Neil Koenig and the Bristol Revunions for their production of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm's Son as a dramatised reading, a Fringe event at the Edinburgh Festival. When we went to this performance, two actors dressed in brown cloaks with hoods read from scripts the parts of Torhthelm and Tidwald searching for Beorhtnoth on the battle field and carrying the body back for burial.
Afterwards we talked to Nell, the producer, and the two actors who had taken the parts that day, Robin Burch (Torhthelm) and Alan Colhoun (Tidwald). Robin is a student at the Old Vic School, Bristol, and Neil and Alan are both In the Drama Dept, at Bristol University. Neil, a Tolkien enthusiast, had been wanting to do Beorhtnoth for years. His original idea had been to produce it as a play, but unfortunately the Publishers said that the copyright did not stretch to stage productions and that all they could do was a reading. For this reason he had modified his plans to a reading with such props and sound effects as were in the spirit of a reading. Therefore we heard an owl hooting, footsteps and a scuffle, and the monks singing a requiem at the end, as non-inclusion of these would have made the references to them in the poem sound a bit silly; but there were no dead bodies strewn over the stage, or a cart for the body as they would have liked, and above a ll, no acting.
All three agreed that it had been a valuable experience and they had enjoyed overcoming the various difficulties involved, e .g . bringing the taped sound effects in at the right time, finding a requiem of roughly the right period, and simply fitting in the necessary rehearsal time. Neil said it would work better as a completely audio production (he had heard of the Radio 3 tape), being a presentation of points of view rather than a plot. He also thought it would make a good film, and would love to produce such a film himself....

I have a program book from 1978 where Homecoming was performed with the permission of George Allen & Unwin. Missed that one, don’t want to miss this one!
Program book for Bristol Revunions 1978 page for - The
Homecoming
of Beorhtnoth,
Beorhthelm's Son
by j.r.r. tolkien
Aug. 21-Sep. 9 (excl. Aug. 29 and Sep. 5). 12.30 p.m. £0.50p.
The Battle of Maldon is one of the great Anglo-Saxon narrative poems-it recounts the events of 991, when the English, led by Beorhtnoth, Duke of Essex, having trapped the numerically superior Viking raiders, allowed them to cross a causeway to join battle. This act of courage led to the massacre of the English. Traditionally, the critics have taken the poem to celebrate the heroism of Beorhtnoth and his followers.
J.R.R. Tolkien saw the poem rather differently, as his sequel to it, The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth, Beorh thelm's Son shows. The Anglo-Saxon word for the heroic spirit is 'ofermod'-Tolkien points out in an essay of the same name attached to the play that this can as easily mean overweening pride or hubris. This fact is brought out in Homecoming in the dialogue between the two retainers of Beorhtnoth, sent out by the monks of Ely after the battle to recover their master's body. In marvellously alliterative verse, Tolkien presents us first with the simple heroic view, represented for us by Torthelm, the young minstrel, best summed up in the famous lines taken from Maldon itself:-
"Will shall be the stemer, heart the bolder, Spirit the greater as our strength lessens. "
But Torthelm's companion, old Tidwald, takes the view that Beorhtnoth was "needlessly noble" , and in his matter of fact fashion,
brings home to us the cruel realities and devastation of war, an ever-present theme in Tolkien's work.
This production is presented by kind permission of George Allen & Unwin (Publishers) Ltd. For cast please see separate sheet.
Director: Neil Koenig

The 1957 enquiry to Tolkien about LOTR film rights came from Al Brodax - who would go on to be the producer for the Beatles film Yellow Submarine a decade later, after a long career in animated film and TV works. I wonder what we would have gotten if Al had gotten those rights?
