A mistletoe bird for Rob’s #BirdOfTheDay theme, #Red&Black. The Mistletoebird helps mistletoes reproduce. After eating their sticky berries, it passes the seeds and often wipes them onto branches, where they stick and germinate—making it a vital mistletoe seed disperser.

A vibrant Mistletoebird perched on a lichen-covered branch, showing its striking red throat and chest, dark blue-black head and wings, and pale underparts.

This Variable oystercatcher, momentarily revealed a bouquet of white tipped feathers under its wing. Variable oystercatchers (New Zealand) are named for their plumage variability: some are pure black, others are black and white pied, and many somewhere in between. #BestOfTheMonth #BirdOfTheDay

A Grey Warbler en silhouette at dusk for Helen's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BokehBirds. Grey Gerygones (Grey warblers) are hosts to Shining Cuckoos, but they can sometimes recognise and reject cuckoo eggs.

An #Airborne white-capped albatross for today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme, #Seabirds. These magnificent birds can exploit the wind gradient above the ocean—repeatedly climbing into faster-moving air and then diving back downwind, gaining energy from the wind rather than flapping continuously.

Takahēs are always #borbs. #BirdOfTheDay. The takahē was declared extinct in 1898, but then rediscovered alive in the Murchison Mountains of Fiordland in 1948—more than 50 years later.

In New Zealand, pied stilits sometimes breed with the critically endangered black stilt (kakī), which produces hybrid offspring with a dark band across the chest, like this #Elegant bird. #BirdOfTheDay.

Australasian shovler for #OGD - #BirdOfTheDay. Mangere, South Auckland.

The Australasian shoveler (Spatula rhynchotis) has a distinctive long, broad, spatula-shaped bill lined with fine comb-like structures called lamellae, which it uses to filter tiny invertebrates, seeds, and plant matter out of shallow water — sweeping its bill side to side or even skimming the surface as it swims.

Unrequited love. The female great crested tern (on the left) did not accept the courtship gift 😐 and flew off... #Mamas&Papas for #BirdOfTheDay.

Human fishers in Australia often watch where these birds dive to find schools of fish near the surface.

White-faced heron enjoying breakfast. #BirdOfTheDay #Herons&Egrets

This heron had a very good morning in Tahuna torea reserve in Auckland. It was so preoccupied that I was able to get close.

Hi, thanks for the comment. My photo is of the Australasian bird. The spur-winged lapwing or plover in Cyprus is also a beautiful bird. Below is its photo from eBird (not mine).
