I never joined the choir back then but had to listen to everything when we were practicing together for concerts. And with them he was always shouting at them to keep their heads up anyway and to not hide behind their black maps. Yes, that's important but shouting hasn't helped anyone ever....

That's a great comparison! Our conductor was glad if we kept the beat, so using our feet for that wasn't forbidden. Fortunately for me, he at one point said: "the cello is always right" and I used that against everyone, conveniently "forgetting" that that was true only for the typical Bach pieces 😂

Frauke @urbanyarning.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
This sounds so good, yay for improvements! And maybe switching feet could help if your body agrees. But I remember the enthusiasm I felt when my wheel was new and I read, I should practise treadling for 15 mins each day, to make it a natural movement 😊

Yes, after a presentation my cis male colleagues could ask stuff that was mentioned in the presentation and our supervisor would celebrate them for bringing so much to the discussion.... It made me so angry. But I would have felt silly to do the same, so I didn't. Guess who still works there....

I had a quick look and I think it just might have been written by a person whose brain works differently from mine 😎 just yesterday I had a discussion with my brother about how the feeling you need to have knowledge to teach others can hold us back - but most people don't let it hold *them* back...

I like books, as I said, but in the end, what made it "click" was listening to my body and what it wanted to do. It turns out I spin left-handed although I am usually right-handed. And when I stopped insisting on following the books and listened to what felt good, it suddenly worked 😎

... rotate and then tighten the clamp block. Check the alignment of the drive band with the wheel and flyer and bobbin whorls. If necessary loosen the knob, move the maiden bar horizontally until aligned and then retighten." (That's for the drive band, not the positioning of the mother-of-all)

Frauke @urbanyarning.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
This is from the leaflet that came with my wheel: "Place the drive band over the wheel and wrap it in one continuous band around the small bobbin whorl, over the wheel again, around the large flyer whirl and tie the 2 ends with a flat knot. Tighten the band tensioner until both flyer and bobbin....

And yes, the flyer and bobbin should be parallel to the floor. The driveband will form a figure eight to go over the wheel, the flyer, the wheel again and then the bobbin.
110
Frauke @urbanyarning.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
On a double-drive wheel the tension on the flyer and bobbin is adjusted with a screw mechanism to change the distance between flyer and drive wheel. The mother-of-all (where the flyer sits between the two maidens) will be moved for this. Maybe that's what the additional peg on top is for.

Frauke @urbanyarning.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
Pegs at the axle: I don't think they should do more than holding the wheel in place.
010
Frauke @urbanyarning.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
I change direction by giving the wheel a gentle turn in the desired direction with my hand before I treadle. If you can manage it just with your feet, that's great but advanced 😁 there's no mechanism for this though.

I like to learn from books, so that was what I did with spinning too. I have a beginner's book by Maggie Casey that helped a lot. Another great teacher is Judith MacKenzie McCuin. Searching for them online should lead you to good resources.
