What variety do you have? We have Brown Turkey and we’ve had 6 from the greenhouse so far, but we transplanted the outdoor one this year so I don’t think we’ll have any from there

Form following function... Shallots hanging on twisted ropes of their own leaves. Thought I’d try it this year instead of braiding and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. #gardening #gardeningsky #growyourown #gyo

My first border tulips of the year have got their party clothes on 🌷

I sowed beans, tomatoes and peppers (all for greenhouse growing) last weekend. Beans are pushing up but not quite out yet, and tomatoes broke the surface sometime between yesterday morning and now. Exciting times!

It’s early sowing time! Kinda crowded in the greenhouse with all the over-wintering stuff still here too, but I’ll find room somewhere! #gardening #gardeningsky #growyourown

I always try to see which books we have in common, there’s always one if you stare hard enough!

I’ve got my seed order in and will be starting early sowings of chillies the day it arrives! 🌶️🌱

I first read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 1985, 35 years after it was published; and it made no difference at all :)

I’m willing to bet your produce was both tastier and healthier than the supermarket equivalents, so I’d call that being ahead

My dad owned a second hand/antiquarian bookshop and I basically grew up in it. Stepping into one anywhere I find one will always bring me a deep sense of peace and happiness.

My greenhouse pepper plants are finally going into overwintering mode (or done-for mode, we’ll see how they go this year) so everything got picked, ready or not. Mostly ‘De Cayenne’ that were left, with a few plucky sweet peppers thrown in. #GardeningSky #Gardening

We’re really lucky that there’s a local magazine for the villages around here that always has a page for the bin schedules so we can just cut it out and pin it on the pinboard. Without that I’d constantly be on the council website

The shortest day of the year has dawned - where I am, anyway. I’m looking forward to another go-round and all the comings and goings of the plants and creatures that entails, but I am especially happy at this time of for the returning sun and the longer days to come.

Books furnish a room, no one should tell you how to arrange yours any more than they should tell you what curtains you like. If it brings you joy, revel in it ❤️

The temperature’s been all over the place and most things that need a bit of cover are in their winter digs. Like this Alstroemeria “Indian Summer” - one of the most popular varieties for good reason - which is loving the extended season it gets.

I like that you’ve managed to turn them into a Hue/Lightness colour picker… serious dedication to the bit 🙂

Since we’re loving Wicked right now, here are my two copies… one’s a hardback First, and one’s a post-West End show tie-in paperback, but the paperback is signed, so I’m honour bound to keep both. It’s hard work, giving up those two extra inches of bookshelf for book nerd reasons…

I had this in my school classroom in 1987. Still kills me that I never finished Granny’s Garden on it. Priceless memories.

We’ve been away on a city break, so I’m seeing my garden in the light for the first time since the middle of last week. This was unexpected. #gardening

I did this at school (all the way over in Australia) and I’m blown away that they’re trying to ban it in schools in the US. Such an important book

I know it’s real. In the very depth of my soul I’m sure I trust you. But… is that picture real? 🥺

There’s debate over what “real reading” is? Pictured here are facsimile copies from the First Folio of Shakespeare. Written to be spoken yet people have bought them to read for pleasure for four hundred years. So it goes both ways. What matters is that you love the words. The arguments are nonsense.

I have a policy of “if I wouldn’t chat to you down the pub (where I’m pretty free with who I talk to), then I won’t talk to you here”. Anonymity isn’t going to make me *less* likely to turn my back on a bigot. Everyone has the right to their opinion, no one has the right to make me hear it 🙂

That’s some good looking compost 🙂 I do have to add though that it’s not correct to say no CO2 is produced - by definition the mesophilic and thermophilic bacteria that generate the heat are making CO2 as a by-product of their biochemistry. Well aerated heaps do that instead of making CH4 though.

I had this! Or very similar. I think mine had a 5-1/4 floppy drive. 20Mb HDD, CGA graphics with advanced EGA mode only available to certain software. Played the hell out of those 4-colour games. Good times.

Dirty Beach! Really fond memories of that part of the South Bank. For a little while (and another lifetime, or so it seems) I lived in one of the houseboats up a bit near Battersea so I get surprisingly nostalgic about Thames mud 🙂

First night of actual freezing in Cambridgeshire. Still no snow, just a light dusting of frost and my bins are frozen shut. Magical. If it’s cold where you are, I hope yours is more fun 🙂

I was just sent this picture from Kings Cross, and more importantly St Pancras, in the snow. I’m enjoying the pictures of the UK snow today; unfortunately South Cambridgeshire is just one big rain puddle. Snowflakes to the left of me Blankets to the right Here I am, stuck in the middle with you.

Another great example of books furnishing a room from someone to whom colour is a vital part of how they experience and engage with the world. I love to see how people make their books part of their lives and homes, and all this #bookshelf posting is showing me more than I could have ever imagined

Alex Anderson @urbanwizardry.bsky.social · 19/11/2024
Another lovely “books furnish a room” setup. Do you need to re-do it regularly as the balance of colour shifts from buying more books?

Alex Anderson @urbanwizardry.bsky.social · 19/11/2024
Now here’s a different approach to shelving books… not sure it would work with my oddball collection of book sizes, but you can’t deny it’s proving that “books furnish a room”. I also know some people that would gasp I horror 🙂 would you stack yours like this?
