Car-centric cities aren’t working. If only we had an alternative. Turns out the solution was here all along- glowing, moving, taking back the streets on 2 wheels, or 3. Here is Berlin being playful, joyful, calm mobility. #berlinfestivaloflights #criticalmass #criticalmassberlin #lichterfahrt

What’s your favorite bicycle infra in #Berlin? We counted at least 12 kinds. Our favorite? Wait til the end. Thanks to @decathlonfrance.bsky.social , we easily covered the city with the long-tail e-cargo, happy kids in tow. Huge thanks to our amazing guides from @adfc.de @adfcberlin.bsky.social 🙏🤗

The conclusion is a strong argument for equitable planning: the study shows that the same amount of infrastructure doesn't produce the same amount of use across communities. Curious to read more? The article is available here: buff.ly/RnZV26S

3️⃣ More isn't always more: for riders who already had bike infrastructure nearby, a new segment added less use. Where networks are mature, closing gaps may be preferable to adding parallel routes.

Urban Cycling Institute @urbancyclinginstitute.org · 15/10/2026
2️⃣ Distance hits some groups harder: the drop-off was steeper for lower-income riders and for women and gender-diverse riders, groups already underrepresented in cycling. The gaps were modest, but the trend is clear.

1️⃣ Proximity is crucial: every extra kilometer between home and a new facility was linked to 24% lower odds of using it such facility

When cities build new cycling infrastructure, who actually uses it? Looking at recently-built infrastructure in Montréal, Toronto, and Vancouver, the authors of this new research identified key factors that determine who uses these facilities. Here's what stood out:

How to make sure that wheelchair users feel welcome in our cities and can enjoy the freedom that able citizens enjoy? Maybe accessibility and cycling infrastructure should be part of a same comprehensive mobility plan? Is your city already taking steps in that direction? Share your thoughts with us!

Research from Canada corroborates this observation: when sidewalks provide poor accessibility, wheelchair users often use bike lanes as a "path of least resistance". And while some research participants felt sidelined by poor sidewalks, others enjoyed using the bike lane.

As the author states, no city is perfect. But Amsterdam's size, terrain and bike infrastructure mean that visiting the city doesn't feel like trying to solve a logistical nightmare. And while cobblestones are still present in the city, smooth bike paths offer a more comfortable alternative.

Amsterdam might be the city of bikes, but what you might not expect is that this also benefits people with accessibility needs. A new article from the perspective of a wheelchair user reveals how the city's streets and transit has put the Dutch capital on her list of travel destinations to repeat.

3️⃣ Technical evidence powers real-world implementation — pairing data, spatial modeling, and pilots with clear storytelling and community engagement bridges design and action. Engineering rigor plus a willingness to test makes implementation achievable.

2️⃣ Combining data models with human experiences — the best work mixes quantitative metrics (conflict analysis, speed tracking) with qualitative studies on accessibility, gender, and health. Hard data plus interdisciplinary insight creates systems that are both robust and inclusive.
