ABSTRACT
We employ the resource-based view and political institutional theory to argue that MNCs with strong domestic political connections can enhance the value created by internalizing the transfer of firm-specific advantages in foreign markets. Our findings suggest that US MNCs with domestic political connections realize more significant value gains from internalization than those without such connections. Additionally, we show that US MNCs’ ability to exploit domestic political capital in foreign markets differs across countries, with significant value gains arising only from internalizing intangible advantages in countries with similar institutions or friendly political relations with the US. We highlight the importance of domestic political connections in the context of multinationality and shed light on the institutional factors that influence MNCs’ ability to exploit these connections overseas.

LEGISLATION: Author of AB 61 (1950) known as the Levering Act required public employees to declare that "I do not advocate, nor am I a member of any party or organization, political or otherwise, that now advocates the overthrow of the Government of the United States or of the State of California by force or violence or other unlawful means..." The oath requirements for non-elected state employees that were set by the Levering Act were overturned by the California Supreme Court in 1967.
Although the Levering Act no longer applies to all state employees, it is still required of elected officials and all public officers. All other employees are only required to declare "I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California"
