"You get guys like that with good experience and some calm minds, it goes a long way. He’s done all the work so far, he seems like a great guy and I think he’ll be a great fit for our backline."

He feels like he’s got a lot of good footy left in him and he’s been a quality player for the Giants, in the leadership group and an All Australian. I think it’s going to be huge for someone like Weiters, another leader down there with ‘Newy’.

As you know, you can’t just say we’re going to jump and be the best team in it: that’s always the goal. But we feel like we’re making progressions and more advanced than we were the year before." On the addition of Nick Haynes: "He’s great. It’s always good to get a wiser mind.

From a total Club point of view, we’ve had stability for a good three or four years and we’ve made progression with what we’ve done the year before. "Although we didn’t finish as high last year as we did in 2023, I still feel like we progressed as a group.

"That middle tier of guys in the 21-25 bracket, some of those started to jump and that’s where you get a lot of growth. The other is consistency and cohesion within the team, we probably had a lot of ins and outs last year, so I see that as a big factor which will help us jump to the next level.

It’s part of our journey: even though we didn’t finish the way we would’ve wanted, I still feel like we made progression as a group. The way it ended was disappointing and left a lot of us frustrated, but you’ve got to take the learnings from it.

It’s pretty full-on for the coaches, you’ve got the draft and trade period: this is their time where they can switch off before it all cranks up again in January." On where the Blues will look to improve: "There are a couple of factors.

I asked if he was jet lagged, but he was chomping at the bit. He’s ready to go, he’ll be up in Queensland - he loves getting back up there. We got into him for missing the week, but he hardly had any break.

A lot of these guys in the rehab group will be back in January, and then you’ve got a four-to-six-week block to fine tune for the practice matches." On Michael Voss' PD trip to the UK: "He’s back, he got in on Sunday night and he was ready to roll on Monday morning.

"The rehab group is pretty small at the moment, which is good, and we’ve got a lot of guys attacking their training. We head up to Queensland next week for a four-day camp. December is a month where you put the work in, but January is the month where you really crank it up.

On Jack Silvagni and the overall list health: "He’s still in the rehab group, starting to integrate back into training. He looks fit & high energy. A lot of the guys came back in good condition which you always hope. You try & set a high standard as leaders to make sure the boys have done the work.

"There are a lot of other young guys who have come in and are working hard too. All they’re doing right now is training, eating and sleeping - I reckon most of them are in bed by about 6ish and forcing down a feed. It’s part of the grind."

On Jagga Smith and the new draftees: "Getting a few new young fellas in, that’s the best part of it. You see them and it reminds you when you were 18 coming in and you had no idea, you’re living out your dream. Jagga has been great, he’s a good kid and he works hard.

There have been a couple of little philosophy tweaks in doing a bit more speed work, but because we’ve had the same coaching group, most of the Club has had stability around it. It hasn’t really felt too different.

I’m into my 12th year now, and the longer you go the pre-season doesn’t get easier so you’ve got to find a way to keep enjoying them." On changes to this pre-season: "There are a few differences, but in the AFL these days there are so many similarities in what clubs do.

"I’m at the stage in my career where you just try and perform at a high level as long as you can. I still enjoy the work. That’s an underrated tool, as you’re getting a bit older - the mindset and how much you really enjoy the grind of the work.

On how his body is tracking: "It’s what you use the off-season for, to iron out the kinks and get yourself moving. I actually feel really good. The body feels good, I was able to do all my off-season work and I’ve been able to punch out the pre-season so far.

For Patrick Cripps, it’s now his 12th pre-season at the level - but the dual Brownlow Medallist is still finding ways to keep improving, elevate his game and get the best out of his teammates. Speaking on SEN on Thursday morning, this is what he had to say.

Boyd’s hoping he doesn’t lose that at any point in his career. “I hope it continues, I like it. There have been some good players to come out of Spotty.”

Joining the likes of teammate Lachie Fogarty and GWS gun Callan Ward, Boyd had the unique distinction of playing in the Western Region Football League for the Woodsmen in 2021, the same year he ended up being drafted.

There’s one thing that Boyd doesn’t want to lose, and that’s the moniker of being from that aforementioned ‘boy from Spotswood’.

But it’s pretty cool. Not a lot of people get to play in front of 85,000 people at a packed MCG, it’s pretty special. “Normally if I do get recognised, it’s because I’m with some of the bigger players: they get recognised first and put two and two together.”

And there’s the personal element. Only recently, the Blues’ No.37 with the headband and long sleeves has started to be recognised — and it’s been quite the adjustment. “It is strange. You’re walking around and someone says your name — I kind of panic sometimes.

“Sometimes I do pinch myself a fair bit, it’s still a bit wild. But it’s starting to sink in that I’m at the level. That’s good.” There’s the competitive element, where he’s running into the game’s grandest arena playing high-stakes football for one of the biggest clubs in the land.

“All the time. There’s been a few moments where even at half time, you can have a serious meeting and it’s very serious and I’m locked in. Then I walk up the race and I’m going ‘what the hell am I doing here?’,” Boyd told the Summer Sessions podcast.

With his 19 senior games comfortably the most he’s played in a season to date (and only injury preventing him from more), Boyd said there are still occasions where he runs out in front of a capacity crowd and has to come to his senses.

It all changed very quickly for ‘the boy from Spotswood’, and it’s a journey which he can scarcely believe has eventuated. But, going into 2025, here we are, with Boyd now on the senior list after being upgraded in the off-season.

It’s being more vocal in training - I feel a lot more confident having played a few more games - and trying to engage with the small forwards, working on things with them whether it’s craft or the defensive side of things.”

“Off-field as well, we’ve got Harry and Charlie who lead the forward line, and I feel like I’m in the next bracket coming through that’s a bit younger to step up.

That includes doubling down on his strengths (“being clean, putting pressure on”), plus excelling in other areas which he identified as growth opportunities. “I spoke to Jordy Russell: it’s about refining my role. The next step is finishing my work a bit more and being more of an offensive threat.

Not resting on his laurels, Fogarty - who now has 70 games on his belt - is always looking to develop his game in other areas and be the best version of himself for the team.

“It’s the defence side of things, it’s probably an area we weren’t great at and let opposition score too many points - especially at stoppage. When we’re winning the ball back, we’re trying to be a bit more dynamic, opening up the ground to make it bigger and allowing ball carriers to use the ball.”

“Everybody is really talented when they’ve got the ball in their hand, everyone knows what to do. So if we can chase and put pressure on, that’s going to be the best thing.

From there, he’s hoping the Blues’ attacking talents can shine off the back of it. “It starts with our defence: as small forwards, we speak about that front line and putting pressure on, going at the opposition with speed.

For Fogarty, whose point of difference is what he can bring on the defensive side of the game to go with his selflessness around goal, he’s heeding the message of the coaches that the Blues’ improvement is going to come through consistency in what they do without the ball.

“We’ve got Zaccy Williams down there now, and he’s been massive for the group. Even for me individually, he’s had to play on some pretty good small forwards over the years - I think he’s got a few tricks which I’ve already asked him about,” Fogarty told Carlton Media.

That’s particularly true for what could be a relatively new-look Carlton forward line in 2025, with departures, role changes, returns from injury and developing young players all being put into the mixer.

From just 15 games, he ended with 21 goal assists: the most by a Blue in a campaign since Eddie Betts in 2013. He lives and breathes Michael Voss’ adage of being the best teammate possible — but even he knows that competition, both in the forward line and in the team, means there are no guarantees.

As someone who brings so much grunt to the Blues’ attacking mix, Fogarty has been highly regarded for the manner in which he has carved out a role for himself. Putting injury setbacks behind him, Fogarty’s 2024 - despite a lack of luck - showed just how important he was to the Blues’ forward line.

Nic Newman on new Head of High Performance Rob Inness: “He loves his speed sessions and his sprinting, it's definitely been tough. It's new ideas, new voices, a new philosophy on things. We all do such similar things at AFL clubs, and you can only train so much, so it's tweaking little things.

He should be a welcomed boost to the Blues’ forward stocks, or will he serve a swingman role? A question will be on how Carlton uses its keys, with Brodie Kemp and Lewis Young also able to be used as utilities, while Nick Haynes arrived in the off-season from GWS.
